#6 Mavericks finish Desert Duals with a 5-1 record

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 6 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team competed at the Wartburg College Desert Duals at the Flamingo Hilton Hotel on Saturday (Dec. 21) afternoon. The Mavericks finished the day solid with a 5-1 record and wins over two ranked opponents. Check out a quick recap of each individual dual below:
 
#6 Colorado Mesa 47, Vanguard 2
The Mavericks welcomed incoming NCAA Division II member Vanguard with a 10-bout sweep in a 47-2 route in their opening match of the day. They picked up four wins by forfeit then another three wins by fall for 35 team points by way of five team point wins.
 
Hania Halverson (131), Celina Cooke (145) and Gretchen Donally (160) all earned wins by pin in the day's opener.
 
The closest matches of the dual came in a pair of 12-2 technical fall wins by Isabella Morales at 110 pounds and Maggie Smith who wrestled up at 207 pounds. Vanguard scored their two team points in those bouts as they scored points in those individual matches.

#6 Colorado Mesa 47, Linfield 0
Colorado Mesa picked up their second-ever shutout as they won all 10 bouts and didn't surrender a point in any of the technical fall wins in a 47-0 win over Linfield in their second dual of the day.
 
The Mavericks received five forfeits and picked up another two wins by fall from Hailey Chapman (131) and Kim Carlin (180). Chapman made her return from injury and wrestled in her first match of the season against Linfield.
 
Madison Heinzer (103), Jojo McDaniel (117) and Erica Smith (145) all were dominant in their 10-0 technical fall victories.
 
The Mavericks only other shutout came during the 2022 Desert Duals when they defeated Pacific University 48-0.

#6 Colorado Mesa 43, #20 Schreiner 3
The Mavericks started a run of three straight duals against ranked opponents with a matchup with regional opponent No. 20 Schreiner and came away with an impressive 43-3 win. They won nine of the 10 duals with six of the wins coming via the pin.
 
Colorado Mesa won the first six matches with four of those coming by pin. They closed the final three matches with a technical fall and back-to-back pins.
 
Freshman Madison Heinzer opened the dual with a pin of Prestejah Yockeman at 42 seconds while redshirt junior Isabeau Shalack closed the dual with a pin of Natalie Espinoza at the 1:03 mark of the bout.

The next dual of the day came against host and No. 11 Wartburg College in what was a very closely contested dual that saw the two teams split the 10 bouts, but the Maverick picked up three technical fall wins to Wartburg's one in a 22-21 win.
 
Madison Heinzer opened with a pin in the 103-pound bout while Jojo McDaniel earned a tech fall win at 117 pounds over Afftynn Stusse 12-2 to push the Maverick lead to 9-6 after three bouts.
 
Wartburg would win the next three matches with two decisions and a technical fall but the Mavericks were able to follow it up with a run of three straight wins of their own. Celina Cooke got a tech fall at 145, Gretchen Donally a tech fall at 160 pounds and Alison Evans picked up a decision at 180 pounds to make the score 22-18 heading to the final bout.
 
Wartburg's Rewa Chababo needed a technical fall or pin to give Wartburg the win but was only able to score a 2-0 decision over Isabeau Shalack.

In their most important dual of the day, the Mavericks came out on the wrong end of a 23-22 loss to No. 8 Simon Fraser in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual. The win for the Red Leafs gives them the inside track to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual championship for the second straight season.
 
The two teams split the 10 bouts but all five of the Red Leafs wins came for bonus points while the Mavericks had one win which was a decision proved to be the difference.
 
Hania Halverson had a big win over up-and-comer Ella Finding at 131 pounds. Halverson earned a second period pin of Finding which helped the Mavericks keep pace in the dual.
 
The Mavericks also had a big injury default win at 180 pounds that saw Alison Evans come out on the right side in a matchup with No. 8 Paige Maher.

The Mavericks closed the day out on a high note as they won nine of the 10 bouts in a 42-6 win over regional opponent Pacific University from Oregon. They picked up three wins by forfeit and another four by pin.
 
138-pounder Keyla Ajoleza had the biggest win of the dual with a 5-4 win over previously ranked Audrey Diaz. Diaz led 2-1 at the break but Ajoleza scored a pair of takedowns in the second period while surrendering one late to hang on to the important regional win.
 
Halverson (131), Smith (145), Carlin (160), and Evans (180) all earned wins by fall.

Colorado Mesa had several strong performances including several that went undefeated. Madison Heinzer went 6-0 and Hania Halverson went 4-0 on the day as the highest undefeated win totals.
 
The Mavericks win against Schreiner was their 50th dual win in program history. They are now 52-21 all-time in dual matchups
 
The Mavericks will be back in action after the new year when they travel to Iowa for the NWCA National Duals at the UNI Dome. Colorado Mesa will likely enter the dual tournament as the No.6 seed.
