Lakewood, Colo. - In the final game of the D2 Conference Challenge, hosted this year by Colorado Christian University, the #21 Colorado Mesa University Men's Basketball Team would suffer another loss to start their year as they were overrun by #5 Dallas Baptist University offense in a 92-69 defeat at CCU Events Center.
The Mavericks now are 0-2 in their first two games of the season while DBU improves to 4-1 with the win. They beat the host team, CCU yesterday by a score of 76-67.
The Mavs would have five players score in double figures in the game with Freshman Mason Honeyman once again leading the charge with 14 points today.
Harvey White would have 13 points to score the second highest total on the team while also being two-for-two from three-point range.
The trio of Ty Allred, Jaylen Pitman and Will Mortimore would all add 10 points apiece to round out the team.
Allred would grab nine rebounds to finish one short of a double-double, while Mortimore added seven rebounds himself.
Starting the game by the first media timeout, roughly four and a half minutes into the match, the Mavs would begin on a high note as they led 11-10 over the Patriots. They would hold the lead for 3:49 of the game before the Patriots would take over from there with the Mavs' last lead coming when the score was 14-13.
They would trail 46-30 at half, but the Mavs improved from yesterday's perimeter defense as they limited the three ball by only allowing the Patriots to shoot 4-12 from beyond the arc.
They would be plagued however by turnovers as the Mavs struggled to control the ball giving up 16 turnovers in the first half alone. Those and the combination of 11 second chance points by DBU would prove to be CMU's weakness for the first 20 minutes.
Into the second half the Mavs would close the deficit to as low as 11 points on 10-5 run through the first five minutes, but the Patriots would respond to their poor three-point shooting in the first half by knocking down 6 three pointers in the second half. They would lead by as high as 27 in the game.
The Patriots would see their most significant contributions in the game from their bench as they totaled 46 points compared to CMU's 12.
DBU would also have five players score in double figures with their leader being Trevor Frank who dropped 16 points off the bench, while going four for nine from beyond the arc.
CMU will look to bounce back from this weekend's results when they head to Durango next week for the Skyhawks Hardwood Classic on Nov. 15 and 16. which is hosted by Fort Lewis College. The Mavs will take on opponents Northern New Mexico College and Western New Mexico University in the Classic. More information will be released next week on the teams and format.
