Denver, Colo. - The #18 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team would end their road portion of the regular season on a high note this afternoon as they bounced back from their first conference loss on Friday, to a 2-0 victory over Regis University today at Regis Turf Fields.
The Mavs now are 12-2-2 overall and are 10-1 in conference play with one game remaining in their regular season schedule. The RMAC Women's Soccer Championship will begin this next Sunday with seedings coming later this next week. Following the loss, Regis moves to 5-9-3 (4-5-2 RMAC) and has one more game remaining in their schedule as well to possibly determine if they will make the postseason or not.
The Mavs would be led offensively by the pair of Braelyn Baclayon and Abby Fotheringham in the victory as each scored once. Baclayon's goal would serve as the game-winner.
Baclayon, who has been a significant part of the Mavs recent offensive success, would score the first goal of today's match, with her giving the Mavs the 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Baclayon has now scored three times in the team's last five matches. She would be assisted by Parker Mairs on the goal, her first assist in conference play.
CMU's first half would be highlighted by much defense as there were only seven shots taken total by both teams, with only one of them on goal. They would be outshot 2-5 by the Rangers, but managed to total three corner kicks to keep sustain the early lead.
In the second half, Abby Fotheringham would extend on the Mavs' lead as she would convert on her first penalty kick opportunity of the season. Fotheringham would score in the 56th minute to make it 2-0 in the Mavs' favor.
Further stellar defense and goalkeeping from CMU would hold the Ranger's scoreless on the day as goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek would record seven saves in the game, with all of them coming in the second half. Her seven saves today would match her season-high for saves in a game.
CMU has now recorded eight shutouts this season with seven of them coming in conference play. Their eight are tied for second best in the conference rankings.
Returning home from their trip, Colorado Mesa will now host their final regular season game this Wednesday afternoon when they take on Westminster University at 4 p.m. at Community Hospital Unity Field.
