Grand Junction, Colo. - In the final game of the regular season for the #18 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team, it would be an early penalty kick by Sauvelyne Randel that proved to the decision maker, as the Mavericks would claim a 1-0 victory over Westminster University on Community Hospital Unity Field.
The Mavs will now await their next opponent as they face off with the winner of the #7 and #8 seed in the RMAC Women's Soccer Championship this Sunday.
Concluding the regular season, CMU finishes with a 13-2-2 record and in RMAC play won all but one game, going 11-1. Their only conference loss would come from #1 Colorado School of Mines on Nov. 1.
Westminster University moves to 7-5-4 (5-4-3 RMAC) with the loss and will take the #6 seed in the postseason after results around the league tonight determined seedings.
The Mavs' singular goal in the match would come on a first half score by the team's leading scorer, Sauvelyne Randel. Randel would be awarded a penalty kick opportunity early in the 10th minute when she was fouled by the Griffin's goalkeeper trying to make a play on the ball. In Randel's PK attempt, she would hammer a low bullet to the left side of the net, faking the goalkeeper out who dove the opposite way.
Randel is now three for four on penalty kicks this season, which is the best on the team and leads the conference. She has nine goals to rank third in the RMAC.
Other than Randel's goal, the first half would be defensively dominated in today's match as there were only a total of five shots taken.
In the complete match, there would be 15 shots taken with the Mavs being just outshot 8-7 by Griffins. There would be 10 saves in total with each goalkeeper recording five.
With those five saves, Keely Wieczorek finishes the regular season with 48 saves total and raises her save percentage to .800. In addition, with the shutout today Wieczorek is now only one shutout away from the school record as she now has 19 in her career.
The Mavs now move into postseason play for the remainder of their year as they secured the #2 seed in the RMAC Women's Soccer Championship. They will host this Sunday for their next match at 1 p.m. on Community Hospital Unity Field. Tickets can be purchased online at cmumavericks.com/tickets. Streaming will occur on the RMAC Network but will now incur costs due to this being a postseason match.
