GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 7 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team opened the season on the right foot with a pair of dual meet victories in the annual Fall Brawl event in Brownson Arena on Friday (Nov. 1) evening.
In the season opening dual against the Snow College Badgers, the Mavericks won all ten of the bouts on their way to a 42-3 victory.
The Mavericks started four freshmen in the first four weight classes, and they didn't disappoint.
Madison Heinzer earned a pin at 103 pounds before
Sophia Cornish and
Jojo McDaniel earned back-to-back tech falls at 110 and 117 pounds respectively.
Thalia Vogelsang capped the freshmen run at 124 pounds with a pin in a minute and sixteen seconds.

Taylor Colangelo earned a pin at 138 pounds while redshirt freshman
Maggie Smith earned an 11-3 decision at 180 pounds to cap off the freshmen in the lineup.

Erica Smith, and No. 4
Jayleen Sekona all earned victories in the season opener. Halverson and Smith earned technical fall wins at 131 and 145 while Sekona capped the dual with a pin at 207 pounds.
The Badgers, ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA national rankings, scored single match points at 145, 160, and 180 pounds.

In the Mavericks second dual of the evening, Colorado Mesa won seven of the 10 matchups in a 27-15 win over the Fort Hays State Tigers who were competing in their first duals of a program. All the matchups in the dual were regional matchups as Fort Hays State are in the same region as Colorado Mesa this season.
Heinzer and Cornish capped undefeated evenings with wins at 103 and 110 pounds while two new freshmen made their debuts at 117 and 124 pounds.
Lorianna Piestewa picked up a 10-1 decision win at 117 pounds while
Alejandra Valdiviezo earned a hard-fought decision at 124 pounds.
The Tigers gained a little steam at 131 and 138 pounds as they picked up back-to-back technical fall wins at those weights.
Colorado Mesa ended the threat as
Celina Cooke defeated returning All-American Nichole Moore 3-1 at 145 pounds. Moore earned All-American honors at McKendree where she spent the last two seasons before transferring to Fort Hays State.
Fort Hays picked up a technical fall win at 180 pounds for their last victory of the night while Colorado Mesa already cinched the dual at 160 pounds where
Gretchen Donally secured a pin at the 3:16 mark of the match over Kaylee Ricketts.
Jayleen Sekona ended the night with a 10-0 technical fall win over Hailey Conley to finish the day unbeaten.

Colorado Mesa will host the Maverick Open tomorrow in Brownson Arena beginning at 9am. They will head out on the road next weekend to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches in Denton, Texas as they will take on the Texas Woman's Pioneers and a non-RMAC dual against William Jewell.
