Women’s Soccer drops road match to #1 Colorado School of Mines

Golden, Colo. - In their biggest match of the season yet, it was the #1 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers that proved to be too much for the Mavericks to handle as the #18 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team would fall in a 3-0 decision to Mines at Stermole Soccer Stadium.

This is the first time the Mavs have faced off with a ranked opponent this season as Mines has been the Nation's #1 team for the majority of the year. This is also only the second time the Mavs have been shut out in 2024 as they average two goals a game.

With the loss CMU moves to 11-2-2 overall and 9-1 in the RMAC. Mines stays undefeated and improves to 16-0-1 overall and 10-0-1 in the RMAC. Both teams have already clinched spots in the RMAC Women's Soccer Championship which starts next weekend.

After a tight start to the match, Mines would strike their first goal of the day in the 30th minute on a goal by Cloey Seltzer. Seltzer's goal would come on a cross by Reese McDermott that skimmed off a Mav player before being put in by Seltzer at close range to give the Orediggers' the 1-0 lead.

Mines would add to their lead shortly after in the 41st minute when Ellise Putnam would score on a breakaway to make the match 2-0. She would be assisted by Kaitlyn Manalili who passed the long ball ahead from midfield.

At half, Mines would slightly out shoot the Mavs 8-6, with four of the Orediggers' shots being on goal.

Mines would add to their lead in the second half when Seltzer made the match 3-0 with another goal in the 52nd minute. This time she would score from long range, outside of the penalty area that found the top right corner of the net.

Parker Mairs would give the Mavs their best chance at breaking the shutout in the 72nd minute on a great offensive possession, but her shot would ricochet off the left post before bouncing back into play.

CMU would take 14 shots in the game with four of them on goal. Mines would shoot just two more times for 16 shots with six of them on goal.

Mira Houck would total three shots to lead the Mavs.

Goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek would record three saves in the match to bring her season total to 36.

CMU will look to continue their weekend on the front range now when they face off with the Rangers of Regis University on Sunday, Nov. 3rd at Regis Turf Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m. with streaming to occur on the RMAC Network.
