Denver, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team would try to climb back from a 3-0 deficit, but in the end would fall short as Regis University would defeat CMU 4-2 in both team's first match of RMAC play.
CMU's record now moves to 3-4-1 (0-1 RMAC) while Regis improves to 2-2-5 (1-0 RMAC).
The Mavs in tonight's match would be led by the duo of Diego Medina and Marc Bonafe as each scored once with Medina's goal being the first of the season for him.
Matteo Bonelli would also notch an assist on Bonafe's goal.
The match would tight for most of the night as Regis would only score once in the first half on a 7th minute goal by Liam Corr to give the Rangers an early 1-0 lead. Past that goal both teams would finish the first 45 minutes with no other action.
Five different goals would be scored in the second half.
Regis would extend their lead in the 57th and 61st minutes on a pair of goals by Ignacio Bellina and Elia Taubo.
Facing a 3-0 deficit, the Mavs would answer with back-to-back goals in 62nd and 63rd minutes.
Medina would score unassisted in the 62nd minute to get the Mavs onto the scoreboard. Medina is now the 12th Maverick to score a goal this season.
To continue the offensive attack, Bonafe would score in the 63rd minute on a Bonelli cross. Bonelli was granted a free kick by the Ranger's corner and in his cross attempt Bonafe would head the ball into the top of the net over the goalkeeper's hands.
With the match now at 3-2 with less than 30 minutes to play both Colorado Mesa and Regis would battle tightly with a combined 20 shots being taken in the second half.
Ultimately it was Corr who would give the Ranger's an insurance goal in the end as he scored once again in the 72nd minute to make the match 4-2.
The Mavs would only attempt eight shots in tonight's match as the Rangers were the dominant offense with 25 shots taken and 13 of them being on goal.
In the 25 shots CMU would total nine saves by Diego Chavez.
Colorado Mesa will now head to South Dakota this weekend as they face off with South Dakota School of Mines on Sunday, Oct. 6. Streaming will happen on the RMAC Network with live stats being able to be followed.
