Mavs finish in 1-1 draw with Hardrockers

Rapid City, S.D. - The Colorado Mesa University Men's Socer Team would challenge hard offensively against the Hardrockers in today's match, but ultimately settle for a draw in the end as the Mavs would play to a 1-1 decision against South Dakota Mines. 

With the tie the Mavs now hold a 3-4-2 record (0-1-1 RMAC) while the Hardrockers move to 1-7-1 (1-0-1 RMAC). 

The Mavs' lone goal in today's match would come courtesy of Matheus Lazzuri who now has two goals this season. He is now tied for the team lead in goals scored. 

Colorado Mesa would gather their only goal of the day in the 44th minute when just seconds before halftime the ball would ricochet around the Hardrocker penalty area before ending up in front of Lazzuri and leading to him putting the ball in the back of the net. Stefanos Christodoulakis would be awarded the assist on the goal, his first assist of the season. 

The Mavs would only lead the first half for roughly 18 seconds. 

South Dakota Mines was able to equalize the game in the 67th minute when they were assessed a penalty kick. Hayden Jaramillo would take the PK, but goalkeeper Diego Chavez would save the shot, but in the save attempt the ball would fly back towards Jaramillo where he would then chip the ball into the left corner of the net to tie up the game at 1-1. 

CMU would take a total of 26 shots in today's match compared to the 10 taken by SDM. 12 of the Mavs' shots would be on goal with six being on goal for the Hardrockers.  

With both teams pressing to score the winning goal there would also be a total of seven yellow cards assesed. The Mavs would receive four of them. 

There would be a combined 16 saves by the goalkeepers in the match, with the Hardrockers' goalkeeper tabbing 11 himself. Diego Chavez would total five. 

The Mavs will continue RMAC play this week when they return home for a match on Thursday, Oct. 10 against Colorado School of Mines on Community Hospital Unity Field. Following Thursday's game they will head to Denver on Sunday, Oct. 13 to take on MSU Denver. Game times are set for 7 p.m. on Thursday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
