Grand Junction, Colo. - The #22 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team would use a three-goal day and 20 shot attack by their offense to top the Thunderwolves of Colorado State University Pueblo in a 3-2 victory on Senior Day at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Colorado Mesa improves their winning streak to nine in a row now and are still perfect in RMAC play. Overall, they boast a record of 11-1-2, while being 9-0 in conference. CSU Pueblo would drop to 3-9-3 (2-6-1 RMAC) following their loss today.
CMU guaranteed their spot in the RMAC Women's Soccer Championship after their win on Thursday over UCCS and currenty sit in second place in the conference with 27 points. Colorado School of Mines has 28 points to just top the Mavs.
In the win, the Mavs would be led by goals from Sarah Dunn, Braelyn Baclayon and Sauvelyne Randel.
Dunn would notch the first goal of today's match as she gave the Mavs the 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Her fourth goal of the season would come on a close range shot within the penalty box area that found the bottom left corner of the net. She would be assisted by Carli Dare who tapped the ball over from near the corner of the goal. Dare now has five assists on the year with all of them coming in conference play.
Adding to that lead in the 40th minute would be Baclayon who has now scored in two straight matches. After receiving a short cross pass from Mira Houck just outside of the penalty area, Baclayon would launch the ball into the top left corner of the net to solidify the Mavs' lead to 2-0 at half.
In the first half of play the Mavs would record a staggering seven corner kicks, in comparison to the Thunderwolves zero. In the full 90 minutes they would have 11 corner kicks for their highest game total of the season.
Entering the second half up 2-0, the Mavs would continue growing their lead when Randel would score once again for Colorado Mesa in the 53rd minute. Randel would dance around with defenders close to the Thunderwolves' goal before knocking her shot into the bottom left corner of the net to make the game now 3-0. Randel has scored eight goals this year and sits in second place in the conference in terms of goals scored.
CSU Pueblo would retaliate with a goal of their own in the 77th minute when a foul in the penalty box would give them a penalty kick opportunity. They would convert on the chance with Ariadna Membrives Lora scoring the goal to make the match now 3-1.
The Thunderwolves would further close the deficit in the 83rd minute when Cortney Cowles would shoot a high, floating shot from outside the penalty area just over the hands over the Mavs' goalkeeper to pull the game within one score. She would gather an assist by Kia Comstock on that goal.
The Mavs would outshoot the Thunderwolves 20-5 in the game with 11 of their 20 shots being on goal.
The goalkeeping unit for Colorado Mesa would total no saves as the only two shots on goal by CSUP would find the net. Both Keely Wieczorek and Allison Collinwood would see time in the game.
Colorado Mesa will return to the road next week when they play two away games against #1 Colorado School of Mines and Regis University. Games are set for Friday and Sunday with start times at 6 p.m. against Mines and 1 p.m. against Regis. Streaming for those matches can be found on the RMAC Network.
