Grand Junction, Colo. - The #22 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team had unfinished business since last year's final matchup against the Mountain Lions of University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. This evening, they would get even as in a defensive battle, as it was the Mavs who would outlast the Mountain Lions and take home the 1-0 victory on Community Hospital Unity Field.
Braelyn Baclayon would score the game winning goal for Colorado Mesa as the Mavs now move their winning streak to eight games in a row and remain perfect in conference play. Overall, they now have a 10-1-2 (8-0 RMAC) record and with the win clinching a spot in the conference tournament. UCCS drops to 5-7-2 (3-5 RMAC) after today.
In addition, with today's victory CMU ends UCCS's three game winning streak.
Baclayon would register the only goal of the first half and game this evening as she would notch her second goal of the year in the 38th minute. Her score would come on a ball ricocheting around the penalty area that ultimately ended up in front of her before she hammered it into the bottom left corner of the net.
Her goal would come unassisted and is just the fourth goal of the Mavs' 27 goals this season that was scored with no assist.
There would only be a combined nine shots taken in the first half with just three of those on goal.
Colorado Mesa would play stellar midfield defense in the second half of the match to hold the Mountain Lions scoreless. This is only the third time this season that they have been shutout.
In the full match there would be 16 shots taken with UCCS taking nine of them. Both teams would have three of their shots be on goal. CMU's three players of Baclayon, Abby Fotheringham and Adessa Correa would take every shot for the team with Baclayon and Fotheringham each leading the team with three apiece.
In the net, goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek would record just three saves, but tab another shutout this season as she now has seven this year. Within conference play she has six of them.
CMU will return to the pitch again this weekend when they face-off with CSU Pueblo on Sunday the 27th for Senior Day. Game time is set for 12 p.m. and will feature a pregame ceremony to highlight the seniors graduating from the program. Tickets can be purchased online at cmumavericks.com/tickets.
