Gunnison, Colo. - The #22 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team would record their sixth shutout of the season and total another three-goal match to take down the Mountaineers of Western Colorado University in a 3-0 victory at Katy O. Rady Field.
The Mavs are now on seven game winning streak and are a perfect 7-0 within the RMAC. Their overall record is now 9-1-2 (7-0 RMAC). WCU drops to 3-7-3 (2-3-2 RMAC) following today's loss.
Similar to the Mavs match against Fort Lewis College earlier this week, a trio of upperclassmen would do the scoring in today's match as players Ally Wachtel, Sauvelyne Randel and Kylie Wells would all total a goal apiece. Randel and Wells would also each record assists.
Wachtel would start the scoring off early in today's match as she notched her first season goal just three minutes into the game. Wachtell's goal would come when the Mavs were granted a corner kick and elected to have Wells take the kick. Wells would launch a long cross to the opposite side of the penalty area where Wachtell was waiting, to which she hammered into the bottom left corner of the net. Wells would earn the assist on the goal as this was Wachtell's second goal of her career at CMU.
Randel would add to the Mavs' lead in the 21st minute when she would be awarded a penalty kick after getting fouled in the penalty area. In her attempt, Randel would hammer the ball to the left side of the net and out of the reach of the Mountaineers diving goalkeeper to move the game to 2-0. Randel is now 2-3 on penalty kick attempts this year and has totaled seven goals. She is currently tied for second in the conference in goals.
The Mavs would lead 2-0 at half as they held the Mountaineers to just three shots total in the first 45 minutes.
Colorado Mesa would put the Mountaineers away for good in the second half as Kylie Wells would score the final goal of the game in the 72nd minute. Upon receiving a leading pass up field from Randel, Wells would beat two defenders to take a close range shot and score for the 3-0 lead and eventual final score. Sarah Dunn would also be credited with an assist on the play as her pass to Randel set up the long score.
Overall, the Mavs would out shoot the Mountaineers 17-8 while having 11 of those shots be on goal.
Today's victory also marks the Mavs' sixth shutout of the season and their fifth in RMAC play.
Keely Wieczorek would record five saves today in the match. Through the Mavs 12 games this year she has only given up nine goals total.
Following today's game, the Mavs will return to Grand Junction as they host a pair of home games this next week. The Mavs will play on Thursday, Oct. 24 against UCCS before closing their weekend on Sunday, Oct. 27 against CSU Pueblo. Game times are set for 4 p.m. and 12 p.m. with both taking place on Community Hospital Unity Field.
