Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mavs use strong second half to top Skyhawks

Grand Junction, Colo. - The #22 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team continue their winning ways this season as they stay unbeaten in conference play tonight in a 3-1 victory over the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks on Community Hospital Unity Field.

With this win the Mavs are now on a six-game winning streak and have gone 6-0 to start RMAC play. They are one of the only two undefeated teams in conference play, with Colorado School of Mines being the only other at 6-0-1. Their overall record is now 8-1-2 (6-0 RMAC) as Fort Lewis moves to 6-4-1 (3-3 RMAC).

The Mavs' senior offensive trio of Sauvelyne Randel, Abby Fotheringham and Adessa Correa would all do the scoring in tonight's matchup as each of them scored once, with Fotheringham scoring the game-winner. All three of them would also coincidentally have one assist apiece to make all their point totals for the game three.

Randel would score the only goal of the first half in tonight's match as she would make the match 1-0 with her score in the 24th minute. Upon a leading pass up field from Adessa Correa, Randel would beat two Skyhawk defenders in a race to the goal where she would then flick a shot at the goal, which was tipped by the Fort Lewis goalkeeper but would find the top right corner of the net. Correa would earn the assist on this goal. Randel's goal was her sixth of the season and makes her  the team leader in goals scored.

Fort Lewis would even up the match not long into the second half as Abigal Nkrumah would find the back of the net in the 52nd minute to make it now 1-1. Her teammate Abila Tapia would assist on the goal.

Less then five minutes later Fotheringham would break this tie as she got her fifth goal of the season in the 56th minute. After a miraculous save on a shot by Randel, the ricocheted ball would land in front of Fotheringham who was in the penalty area. Fotheringham would blast the shot into the net to ensure there was no stopping this one as Randel earned the assist.

To put the game out of reach, it was Correa who would score late in the 77th minute when she would take a long range shot into the top left corner of the net from just outside of the penalty area. Fotheringham would earn the assist as Correa would launch her pass and notch her fourth goal of the season.

The Mavs would outshoot the Skyhawks 13-9 in tonight's match with seven of the Mavs' shots being on goal.

Keely Wieczorek would record two saves and only allow the single goal in the match. She has only given up two goals in her last five matches and only allows .82 goals per game.

Colorado Mesa will now conclude their weekend as they get tomorrow off before heading to Gunnison on Sunday to take on the Mountaineers of Western Colorado University. Game time is set for 3 p.m. with streaming to occur on the RMAC Network.
