Mavs defeat Roadrunners to move win streak to five

Denver, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team would take down top conference opponent Metropolitan State University Denver today as they outlasted the Roadrunners in a 2-1 victory at Assembly Athletic Complex.

The Mavericks entered today's game on a four game win-streak as they are now a perfect 5-0 to start conference play. With the victory they now sit tied for first in the conference lead with Colorado School of Mines.

CMU now boasts a 7-1-2 record and are 5-0 in RMAC play. MSU Denver drops to 6-2-4 and are 5-1 in RMAC. Both teams were receiving votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches National Poll.

The Mavs' Sauvelyne Randel and Kylie Wells would be the scorers of the team's two goals in today's match. Randel has now totaled three goals in two games after scoring two against Colorado Christian in their last match. She now leads the team with five goals and is tied for second in the conference.

The Mavs have been one of the best offensive teams in the nation lately as in their last five matches they have outscored opponents 13-1 with today's victory. Overall they have outscored opponents 20-8 through 10 games.

Colorado Mesa would score their first goal of the day in the 7th minute after a foul led to a three-person scoring play. Upon being granted a free kick from around midfield, the Mavs' Ally Wachtel would launch the ball down into the Roadrunner's penalty area where it would first land in front of Sarah Dunn who would then pass it over to Randel to take a short range shot and score for the early 1-0 lead. Both Dunn and Wachtel would earn assists on the play with this being Wachtel's first assist and points of the season.

Wells would add to that lead in the 23rd minute when she would make a defender fall before dribbling all alone towards the left side of the box to put a shot on the right corner of net and score for the 2-0 lead. Wells now has three goals on the season which best for second on the team. Her goal today would serve as the game-winner.

CMU would lead 2-0 at half as they held the Roadrunners' to only five shots in the first 45 minutes.

Metro would close the deficit by one goal when they would get their only score of the day in the 61st minute on a penalty kick. After a corner kick attempt by the Roadrunners would lead to the Mavs fouling in the penalty box it was Metro's Kailani Nuhn who would attempt and be successful on the PK to move the game to 2-1 still in Colorado Mesa's favor.

The Mavs have only faced two penalty kick attempts all year, but both have been successful as opponent's are two for two on goals.

The Mavs' goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek would total seven saves in today's match. This is her highest total of saves in a single match this season with her previous highest being five.

As a team the Mavs out shot MSU Denver at 11-8 with six of their 11 shots being on goal.
