CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 4 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team competed in the first day of the NWCA National Dual Championships on Friday (Jan. 5) afternoon at the University of Northern Iowa Dome.
For the fourth time in as many tries, the Mavericks will be coming home with a top-8 finish in the dual format tournament.
#4 Colorado Mesa 28, Elmira 20
The Mavericks won six of the bouts that included a forfeit at 109 pounds in a 28-20 win over the Eagles in the two programs first-ever dual matchup. The win moved the Mavericks into the quarterfinals and a date with their nemesis McKendree with a spot in the top-4 on the line.

Holly Beaudoin (136) and
Caylee Collins (170) secured pins for the Mavericks while
Jennesis Martinez (101),
Hania Halverson (123), and
Dalia Garibay (143) all finished with technical fall victories. For Garibay, it was her first match of the season at 143 pounds after spending the first half of the schedule at 155 pounds.

Colorado Mesa wasn't able to breakthrough in this matchup with McKendree as they fell 31-12 to the Bearcats in the quarterfinal matchup. The Mavericks were only able to secure a pair of wins in the dual.

Holly Beaudoin earned a 42 second pin over Alexandra Szkotnicki at 136 pounds while
Celina Cooke earned a pin over No. 9 ranked Destiny Rodriguez at 155 pounds for the Mavericks two wins.
There were three ranked matchups in the dual (101, 109, and 143) with McKendree winning all three crucial bouts.

With a spot in the placement rounds on the line, two stalwarts in NCAA women's wrestling squared off with No. 4 Colorado Mesa and No. 23 Emmanuel University. Each team won five bouts in the dual but the Mavericks prevailed with three straight pins in the middle weights to secure the 24-22 victory.
Jennesis Martinez earned a technical fall at 101 pounds to get the dual started but Emmanuel answered with three straight victories.
After a
Kaydence Boyd decision victory at 130 pounds,
Holly Beaudoin,
Dalia Garibay and
Celina Cooke rattled off three straight wins by pin to nearly seal the dual victory for the Mavericks.
After an injury earlier in the day, Kim Carlin and
Caylee Collins took turns wrestling up at 191 pounds with Collins losing a tough 7-2 decision in this bout to close out the day.
