GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa used a 15-0 second half run to pull away from Black Hills State, as the Mavericks improved to 10-0 in the RMAC with an 80-57 win in Brownson Arena on a night that
Mac Riniker scored his 1,000
th career point.
Trevor Baskin finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, matching a career-high for the redshirt junior, while Riniker also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Black Hills State, which has advanced to the last two NCAA Tournament Final Fours, falls to 7-8 this season and 5-4 in the RMAC with the loss.
The Mavericks are now 14-2 overall with the victory. They are 7-0 at home and 5-0 in the year 2024, as they currently are riding a six-game winning streak. CMU has won 19 straight RMAC matches dating back to January 28 of last season.
Colorado Mesa shot 55 percent from the field and 52 percent from three-point range (13-25). The Mavs dominated on the glass, outrebounding Black Hills State 42-23. The Mavericks won by 23 points despite a season-high 23 turnovers, 14 of which came in the first half.
In what has become a recurring theme this season, the Mavericks survived a tight game in the first half before rapidly pulling away in the second half. The game's opening 20 minutes featured seven lead changes, the last of which was an
Isaac Jessup three-pointer with 38 seconds left that gave the Mavs a 34-32 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Black Hills State tied the score at 34-all with the first points of the second half, but from there, the Mavs caught fire. CMU scored the next 15 points (five from Riniker, three apiece from
Isaac Jessup and
Christian Speller and two apiece from Baskin and
Owen Koonce) to build a 49-34 lead. The Mavericks never led by less than nine points for the rest of the game.
Needing 12 points to reach 1,000 for his career entering the game, Riniker had 10 points on the night when he hit a three-pointer with 9:14 remaining in the game to put the Mavs up 62-50. Riniker was recognized at the ensuing media timeout and received a warm standing ovation from the crowd of 899 in Brownson Arena.
Riniker becomes the 21
st player in Maverick history to reach the 1,000-point club, where he joins teammate
Trevor Baskin. Baskin and former Maverick
Blaise Threatt both crossed the 1,000-point threshold last season. Riniker currently has 1,001 career points.
It has been a momentous few days for Riniker, who won his third RMAC Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday and now has recorded double-doubles in each of CMU's last two games. Baskin recorded his fifth double-double of the season tonight.
Behind Baskin and Riniker, the Speller brothers each produced solid games.
Christian Speller recorded 11 points, shooting 3-for-5 from three-point range and setting a new season high in both points and minutes (19).
Christopher Speller had four points, five assists and two blocks.
Colorado Mesa returns to the court tomorrow night for the second game of its three-game homestand against South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers are 7-9 overall and 5-5 in RMAC play after defeating Westminster 84-75 earlier Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. after the women's game.
