DENVER— Shannon Feran won her qualifying round and semifinal heats before taking second in the final as she led the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's triathlon team in Saturday morning's Aquathlon Eliminator against the University of Denver.
The competition featured four rounds of competition over a 200-meter swim in the El Pomar Natatorium and a 1-kilometer run around the adjacent Denver Soccer Field.
Feran was the fastest finisher in both the qualifying round (6:14.48) and semifinal (6:16.17) before clocking a time of 6:08.85 in the final. Denver's Alex Campbell finished the final in 5:55.88 to garner the individual win after qualifying second out the earlier two rounds.
Campbell also led the Pioneers to a 60-43 win in the team battle, based off each team's top five finishers.
Feran scored 14 for the Mavs, who also had
Nadine Klive and
Natalie Mitchell in the 8-woman final, pre-determined to include at least three athletes from each team.
Fiona Graves also won the non-scoring consolation round heat, although the official ninth through 16
th place finishes had been determined by times from the semifinal.
Klive finished sixth in the final with a time of 6:31.29, just off her semifinal round time of 6:30.58, while Mitchell was eighth in 6:50.91 after turning in times of 6:46.66 and 6:46.11 in the qualifying and semifinal rounds. She had finished ninth in the semifinals but moved into the final as the Mavs' third finisher from that round.
Josie Williams, tenth in the semifinal round at 6:48.47 and
Torin Lackmann, 11
th in 6:59.52, were the Mavs' other two team scorers, contributing six and five points, respectively to CMU's team score.
Williams went on to take third in the consolation round while Lackmann was fifth in that race.
Meanwhile, Graves took the consolation round win in 6:38.48 after finishing 13
th in the semifinal round (7:06.66).
The Mavs will be back in action in two weeks, racing close to home at the Desert's Edge Triathlon at Highline Lake State Park in Loma on Sept. 16.
