Chavez Makes 13 Saves In Scoreless Draw

BURNABY, B.C. – Diego Chavez made 13 saves, more than doubling his career high, as Colorado Mesa gutted out a 0-0 draw with the Simon Fraser Red Leafs.

The result extends CMU's unbeaten streak to three games and puts the Mavs' record at 3-2-1 overall. Simon Fraser, which tied for first in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Preseason Poll, has an identical 3-2-1 record after Saturday's match.

John Roberts recorded two shots on goal for CMU while Joey Joiner had two total shots as CMU earned a point despite a statistical disadvantage offensively. The Red Leafs laid siege to CMU's goal all night, outshooting the Mavericks 22-8 overall and 13-4 among shots on goal.

Given that disparity, Chavez was the star of the show. The redshirt sophomore from Longmont, Colorado tied his previous career high of six saves in the first half alone on Saturday, then made seven more in the second half. He was consistently tested all game long, making four saves in the game's first 25 minutes and three in the game's last 10 minutes.

Second Team All-GNAC Defender Nico Papakyriakopoulos had a team-high four shots for the Red Leafs and was turned away by Chavez three times. Colorado Mesa's starting back four of Lluis Fabregat, Felipe Busellini, Dylan Hobson and Raymond Jackson all played the full 90 minutes and helped out with several successful clearances.

The Mavericks had a couple of chances late to grab a winning goal, but Hobson's free kick skimmed over the bar with three minutes left and Roberts's long-distance effort was saved with 34 seconds left.

Colorado Mesa will play its final nonconference game next weekend, but it will be against an RMAC opponent in Regis. The Mavs face the Rangers on the road next Friday, then host Colorado Christian two days later to open the official RMAC schedule.
