DENVER – Colorado Mesa used a couple of quickfire second-half goals to secure a key 3-1 win in a nonconference tune-up against RMAC rival Regis.
The Mavericks improve to 4-2-1 on the season and extend their unbeaten streak to four matches with the result, getting goals from
Fernando Morales,
Manuel Ponce Casas and
Alec Fronapfel in the victory.
Colorado Mesa outshot Regis 19-16, placing 13 attempts on goal compared to seven by the host Rangers. Morales and
Matheus Lazzuri led CMU with three shots apiece.
Diego Chavez made six saves to earn the win in net for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks led 1-0 at halftime, but it could have been more. Regis goalkeeper Cristian Sattin, who made nine saves for the Rangers, was called upon early for three saves in the opening 12 minutes, including an incredible diving stop low to his left-hand side to rob Fronapfel of an opener just six minutes in.
Fernando Morales got CMU on the scoresheet in a goal that came out of nothing. Off a Regis throw in, the ball pinballed off several players from both teams and landed at the feet of Morales, who turned and hit a shot from well outside the box that caught Sattin by surprise and nestled in the top corner over a leaping Regis keeper.
Morales nearly doubled the advantage less than a minute later, rounding the keeper on a breakaway, but a backtracking Regis defender slid to clear Morales' shot off the line. Between five from Sattin and one from the defender, Regis made six saves in the first half.
The lack of a second meant CMU's lead was more vulnerable than the run of play made it seem, and Regis equalized off a corner kick in the 64
th minute with Liam Carr assisting Kyle Bergmeier to make it 1-1.
But the Mavericks, who are now 4-0 this season when they score at least once, had an answer. In the 72
nd minute,
Manuel Ponce Casas tallied his second goal of the season off an assist from
Leo Mireles to allow the Mavericks to pull in front once again. Just three minutes later, Fronapfel provided some insurance with the best goal off the match.
Playing as a left winger, Fronapfel got to run onto the ball in space thanks to a leading pass from
David Peters. With one defender to beat, Fronapfel chose to cut inside on his right foot rather than sprint down the sideline and uncorked a beautiful strike to the top corner at the far post. The goal continued a good run of form for the redshirt senior. Fronapfel, who led CMU with nine goals in 2021, now has three goals in his past three matches after only finding the net once in 2022.
Regis played the final 15 minutes a man down after defender Matteo Colombo received a straight red card in the 76
th minute, but the outcome seemed mostly decided by that point.
Colorado Mesa will return home on Sunday to face Colorado Christian. Despite it being against an RMAC opponent, this is the final nonconference game of the season for CMU before the remaining games count in the RMAC standings.
