Fronapfel's Brace Leads Comeback Win

BURNABY, B.C. – Alec Fronapfel scored twice early in the second half and the Mavericks came back from a goal down to beat Montana State Billings 2-1 at a neutral-site match in British Columbia, Canada.

Diego Chavez made five saves and earned the win in net and Manuel Ponce Casas and David Peters each tallied an assist on one of Fronapfel's goals. The result marks the third consecutive season that CMU has defeated MSUB and moves the Mavericks to 3-2 in 2023.

The Mavericks outshot the Yellowjackets 16-12 and had a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Mavs had half as many fouls as MSUB (9-18) and took eight corner kicks compared to MSUB's one.
It was the Yellowjackets who jumped out to an early lead, however, with Marc-Paul Renaud scoring in the eighth minute off an assist from Ty Vohland, who entered the game as his team and conference's leading scorer. Through 45 minutes, MSUB held an 8-7 shots advantage and could've had more if not for four saves from Chavez.

The tide turned completely in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Manuel Ponce Casas got played through in the 52nd minute and fired a shot across the net. Yellowjackets goalkeeper Jeremi Campagnolo made a diving save but didn't secure the ball cleanly. Fronapfel won a mad dash towards the ball and leapt into the air, tapping in from close range with a horizontal flying kick that saw his front foot level with his head on contact.

Fronapfel, who scored nine goals in 2021 but just once in 2022, waited less than five minutes to grab his second goal of 2023. The Mavericks won a corner kick in the 56th minute, which found the head of David Peters at the edge of the six-yard box. Peters headed it back across goal, but the ball fell to the ground and bounced once about three yards in front of the net without being touched by another player. Once again, Fronapfel was the first to react, sticking a leg out and finishing into the right-hand side netting.

The Mavericks nearly had a third less than 60 seconds after their second when an MSUB yellow card gave CMU a free-kick opportunity, but Dylan Hobson's shot attempt was saved by Campagnolo. The Yellowjacket goalie would make two more saves in the match, stopping Joey Joiner in the 62nd minute and denying Fronapfel a hat trick with a save with just nine seconds left in the match.

Fronapfel had five shots and four shots on goal to lead the Mavs offense. Manuel Ponce Casas (three) and Joao Pedro Moraes (two) also had multiple shot attempts for CMU.

The Mavs will stay in Canada through the weekend and face Simon Fraser, Canada's only NCAA member institution, in a Saturday night match at 8:30 p.m. (MT). Simon Fraser is playing Fort Lewis on Thursday night.
