Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 4 Colorado Mesa baseball team swept the Saturday (Apr. 29) doubleheader from the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys and received some help from the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, and are now one win away from clinching the RMAC regular season title.
Home runs and extra base-hits dominated game one of the doubleheader as the Mavericks held on for a 6-5 win in the day's opener.
Julian Boyd hit the first home run of the game as he hit a solo shot in the top of the first inning to give the Mavericks the lead. The next batter that came to the plate was
Conrad Villafuerte who drew a walk.
Stevenson Reynolds followed that with a two-run homer to make it 3-0 after the first.
Colorado Mesa got another one in the top of the third on Reynolds' second home run of the game that made it 4-0.
Highlands got back in the game as they scored four runs in the bottom of the third after the Cowboys had a two-run double and a two-run home run in the inning.
Villafuerte delivered the go-ahead double in the fifth to make it 5-4 then
Declan Wiesner gave the Mavericks some insurance, they would later need, as he hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning to make it 6-4.
The Cowboys would get one, unearned, run in the seventh before
Anthony Durbano would record all three outs in the inning via the strikeout to earn his sixth save of the season.
Liam Hohenstein earned the win as he allowed four runs on five hits, walked two and struck out six in four innings of work. The freshman improved to 6-0 on the season.
In the nightcap, Colorado Mesa scored three touchdowns and kicked a field goal while allowing just a touchdown in a 24-7 win over Highlands in game three of the series.
Caleb Thomason,
Paul Schoenfeld and
Ethan Ezor all finished the game with four hits while the three-hole in the lineup produced eight RBIs in the win.
Thomason went 4-for-5 with four runs scored three runs driven in, a double and two home runs. He hit the first of his two home runs in the top of the first where the Mavericks sent 12 men to the plate with the first nine reaching without an out.
His second home run led off the sixth inning with a solo home run that made the score 21-3.
Ezor finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs scored, three runs driven in a double and a home run while Schoenfeld was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three runs driven in with a double.
Conrad Villafuerte and
Joey Mazzetti combined to go 3-for-6 with a double, a home run and eight runs driven in. Villafuerte launched a three-run home run in the first while Mazzetti had a two-run single and a two-run double in the game.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game beginning at Noon.
