LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 4 Colorado Mesa baseball team made it six wins in a row after a 17-2 win over New Mexico Highland on Friday (Apr. 28) afternoon in the opening game of a four-game series at Brandt Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks scored all 17 of their runs in four innings plating five in the first and fourth innings while scoring three in the fifth and four in the seventh and final inning of the mercy-rule shortened game.
With the stats provided,
Robert Sharrar,
Julian Boyd,
Harrison Rodgers, and
Jonathan Gonzalez all had two hits in the game.
Max Valdez smoked a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning that brought around
Stevenson Reynolds and Boyd. It was his sixth home run of the season and gave the Mavericks a 10-0 lead at the time.
Gonzalez homered to lead off the fifth inning which extended the Maverick lead to 11-0. It was his third home run of the season.
Jacob Rhoades took the ball in game one and didn't disappoint. He improved his record to 4-2 on the season after scattering three hits, walked one and struck out six in six shutout innings.
Colorado Mesa improved to 34-9 on the season and maintain their lead in the conference with their magic number to win the conference down to four. Any Maverick win or MSU Denver loss to Mines this weekend shrinks that number.
The two teams will continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
