The Mavs knew what they had to accomplish at the National Qualifier at the Air Force Academy this past weekend in order to return to the National Championship tournament. Win two and they were in, headed to Dallas Texas for the second year running for the 2023 7s Nationals Championship tournament. The early morning travel day started off with a weather delay due to the 2 inches of snow covering the entire pitch.
Â
For the first time this year the ladies were able to see and square off against the unknown Division II New Mexico State University. CMU scored first and scored consistently throughout the match. With a solid catch and ball movement off of the initial kickoff,
Carly Scheck was off to the races just 30 seconds in. At the end of the first half NMSU snuck in to score their first and only try and conversion of the match. Quality offloads, big breakthroughs, running with support, winning the ruck and overall decent rugby was the story of the first match. With all the finishers getting in to see quality minutes, the team ran away with this one 36-7.Â
The scoring frenzy continued as the team entered into their second matchup against the University of Denver. Scheck started this match off with another catch and run, this time only 25 seconds into the match for the first try. She would tack on one more try for the hat trick on the day. It was a solid day of scoring as nine different Mavs touched down between the two matches. CMU handled this match 33-12.
