Mavs drop two, series to Regis

CMU held to six hits, two runs in Sunday twin-bill

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks were uncharacteristically held to just six hits and a pair of runs as they dropped a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball doubleheader to visiting Regis University on Sunday here at the CMU Softball Stadium.

The Rangers (28-18) won the games 10-2 and 4-0 as the Mavericks (26-17) lost a RMAC home series for the first time in nine years, three games to one after the teams had split a pair of 1-run games on Saturday.

In the process, the Rangers moved to 25-11 in RMAC play, a half-game ahead of the Mavericks (24-11) for second place in the RMAC standings.

In Denver, Colorado Christian completed a series sweep of MSU Denver to clinch the RMAC regular season title for the first time.  The Cougars, who will visit the Mavericks next weekend, are now 35-1 in conference play.  MSU Denver is now fourth in the conference standings at 22-12 with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Game 1

The Rangers built a 6-0 lead through four innings and finished with a 12-3 advantage in hits as Rachel Williams Shayeln Allen hit home runs.  The Mavericks did close the gap to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Olivia Litzen hit an RBI single before fellow freshman Makayla Westmoreland doubled in Iliana Mendoza, who had CMU's other hit.

However, the Mavs, who lead the RMAC in numerous offensive categories, would get no closer as a passed ball and RBI groundout extended the lead to 8-2 in the top of the sixth.  The Rangers then completed the scoring on Williams' 2-run homer in the top of the seventh.  Williams drove in four runs while adding a 2-run double as part of a 3-run Ranger fourth.

Meanwhile, Kylie Harpman tossed the complete game without allowing a hit in six of the seven innings.  She also struck out seven Mavericks and gave up just two walks.

Game 2

The Mavs' offensive struggles continued as Mendoza, Rylee Crouch and Miranda Pruitt managed the Mavericks'' lone hits.  Mendoza's was a 1-out double in the bottom of the second but was wasted as two groundouts got the Rangers out of the inning with a 1-0 lead after Miia Campos had hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first.

The Rangers then doubled their lead in the fourth on an Olivia Wick solo home run.

They then doubled the lead once again in the fifth as Jessi Case singled to right to plate Lima Magana before another Campos sacrifice fly complete the scoring.

The Mavs tried to get back into the game in the bottom of the fifth as Crouch and Pruitt both singled but were left of base.  The Mavericks also wasted two walks in the bottom of the sixth before going quietly in the seventh as Abby Covington picked up a 2-iinning hitless save after coming on in relief of starter Vanessa Candito.

The Mavericks will attempt to bounce back next weekend when they host the Colorado Christian Cougars, currently ranked 12th nationally in Saturday (Apr. 22) and Sunday (Apr. 23) twin-bills.
