Late Pair of Goals Give WLAX The Win

DURANGO, Colo.Justine Anderson and Melanie Evans scored in the final four-and-a-half minutes of game time to lift Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse to a 10-8 victory over Fort Lewis to sweep the season series over the Skyhawks.

Regan Wentz led the team with a pair of goals, notching her fourth multi-goal game of the season on a day when eight other Mavericks added a single goal. Shannon Murphy made 10 saves in net for CMU for the second straight game.

The win over Fort Lewis completes a comeback set in motion on March 6, 2016, when the Mavericks beat Fort Lewis for the first time in program history after losing the previous 11 meetings. Since then, the Mavs have now won 11 straight meetings themselves to even up the all-time series at 11-11.

The Mavericks are now 6-5 overall and 5-1 in RMAC play. The win over Fort Lewis was CMU's 30th consecutive win over an unranked opponent.

Although Fort Lewis rallied to tie the score at eight before Anderson and Evans scored, Colorado Mesa never trailed in the contest. The Mavericks took a 3-0 lead behind Wentz's two goals sandwiched around a tally from Peyton Ivey. The Skyhawks would answer with a few goals of their own, but Ali Bryant scored for CMU to ensure it was 4-3 Mavs after a quarter.

Taylor Jakeman and Courtney Havel scored within the first three minutes of the second quarter to up the lead to 6-3, but again, FLC battled back, scoring twice to make it 6-5 and answering a Kiley Davis goal with the final score of the half to give the Mavericks a 7-6 lead at halftime.

After the relative high scoring of the first half, the second half turned into a defensive battle. Each team only managed one goal in the third period and neither team scored for the first eight minutes of quarter number four. It was Fort Lewis's Haley Dostie who found the net with 6:55 to play to tie the score 8-8. Dostie had four of FLC's goals on the day and currently ranks third in the RMAC with 31 goals behind CMU's Kiley Davis and Regis's Bailey Truex. Davis was held to one goal on Thursday but maintained her streak of scoring in every Maverick game this season.

Despite Dostie's scoring heroics, she received a yellow card late in the fourth that handed the Mavs a woman-up opportunity, which they converted when Justine Anderson scored with 4:22 to play. Evans added a key insurance goal 90 seconds later.

Fort Lewis never had a chance to answer back this time, turning the ball over on their only possession of the final three minutes. Ali Bryant had a key draw control, one of five on the day to go with seven ground balls.

The Mavericks will go for another season sweep on Sunday as they travel to CSU Pueblo as part of a doubleheader with the men's programs. The CMU men and Pueblo men will play at noon Sunday, followed by the women at 3 p.m.
