PUEBLO, Colo. –
Caroline Ohngemach recorded a career-high six points and the Mavericks defense nearly pitched a shutout, recording a 19-1 win over CSU Pueblo to improve to 6-1 in conference play and 7-5 overall.
Ohngemach finished with four goals, tying a career-high in that category as well.
Shannon Murphy made six saves in goal against just the one goal conceded while five Mavs –
Justine Anderson,
Ali Bryant,
Melanie Evans,
Kiley Davis and
Taylor Jakeman – scored two goals apiece in the complete team win.
Colorado Mesa outshot the ThunderWolves 32-15 with a 23-7 edge in shots on goal. They scooped 10 more ground balls than CSU Pueblo did (27-17) and forced the ThunderWolves into failing nearly half of their clear attempts (12 CSUP conversions out of 23). The Maverick defense held Pueblo scoreless for the first 32 minutes of game time and led by as many as 12-0 before CSUP's Baylee Mee found the net for the hosts' only goal of the day.
Ohngemach recorded a four-goal game for the second time in her career and the first since last season's RMAC tournament semifinal against UCCS. With a pair of assists, she also recorded her first multi-assist game since her collegiate debut on March 4, 2022 against Adams State, when she had four.
Ohngemach was a distributor in the early part of the game, assisting on goals for
Ali Bryant and
Melanie Evans in the early going. Davis, Evans and Bryant each recorded two goals in CMU's 12-0 first-half start, with solo strikes by
Regan Wentz,
Taylor Jakeman,
Elizabeth Renken, Ohngemach,
Devon Morris and
Justine Anderson. It was the first career collegiate goal for Morris, a native of Davis, California who also recorded the first multi-point game of her career by assisting on Davis's second goal.
Ten different Mavericks scored at least one assist, with Ohngemach and
Melanie Evans as the only players with two.
Brianna Anderson grabbed an assist as an outfield player in the third quarter, then subbed into the game for the final two minutes at goalie in relief of
Shannon Murphy.
While the Mavs offense as a whole cooled down in the second half, Ohngemach was just starting to heat up. She scored one in the third from
Brianna Anderson while
Justine Anderson and
Courtney Havel also found the net, then grabbed two of CMU's four in the fourth quarter.
A widely appreciated moment for the team came when defensive stalwart
Kelsey Viger weaved through the opposition half to score her first goal of the season unassisted with just under three minutes left to play. Viger, who leads the RMAC in caused turnovers with 34, tallied just her third career goal in 46 games in a CMU uniform and also assisted on Havel's goal in the third period.
The Mavericks will return home next weekend for two games against the upper echelon of the conference, meeting third-place UCCS on Friday at 4 p.m. and first-place and national No. 3 Regis on Sunday at 1 p.m., both at Community Hospital Unity Field.
