Switzer Breaks Record In Big Adams Win

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse pitched a shutout in the first half and scored the first 16 goals of the game in a dominating 22-3 win over Adams State on Friday from the ASU campus.

Levi McCoy scored a career-high four goals and five points to lead a deep and balanced CMU attack while freshman Connor Jensen recorded his first career hat trick with three goals. AJ Switzer tied the single-game program record with five assists for the third consecutive time, and in the process overtook teammate James Steinke as the program's career assist leader with 65. While Steinke had "just" one assist on Friday to put his career total at 61, he did score his third hat trick of the season with three goals.

Overall, a total of 12 Mavericks found the net against the Grizzlies while another three scored at least a point with one of more assists. Erich Petersen scored twice for the first goals and points of his collegiate career while fellow freshman Nik Moore made his collegiate debut and contributed two assists.

The Mavericks scored eight goals in each of the opening two quarters, led by two from Philip Petersen in the first period and two apiece from McCoy, Jensen and Steinke in the second. Switzer tallied all five of his assists in the first half, including four in the second quarter, as the Mavericks went to halftime with a 16-0 lead and went deep into their bench for the final 30 minutes. In fact, CMU only got three goals from their starters, with the other 19 coming from players off the bench.

The Grizzlies bounced back in the third quarter, scoring their only three goals and holding CMU scoreless for the entire third quarter. The Mavericks returned the favor in the fourth, however, scoring six times and holding Adams State without a goal once again to make it three out of four shutout quarters. This is the first game this season with three shutout quarters for the Mavs defense, after recording two shutout quarters earlier this year against Lees-McRae and Westminster.

The Mavericks eased into the game, not scoring for the first five minutes, but they heated up in a hurry. After Cade Hathaway broke the ice with 9:48 left in the first, it would be 6-0 by the time the next five minutes came off the game clock. CMU outshot Adams State 35-6 in the first half, including a 22-2 disparity in shots on goal.

Colorado Mesa used all four goaltenders on their roster, with each goalie – Mac Bayless, Kanyan Rhodes, Calvin Doucette and Dom Pasquale – getting a full quarter in net.

The No. 12 Mavericks continue their road trip on Sunday when they face CSU Pueblo at noon. The Mavs are 10-2 overall and 2-0 in RMAC play.
