Mavs sweep past Erskine in AVCA opener

TAVARES, Fla.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team passed their first test at the AVCA Small College Championships with flying colors, sweeping the Erskine College Flying Feet, 3-0 on Friday morning here at Hickory Point Beach.

The dual, the first in Pool D, was played to clinch and saw the fourth-seeded Mavericks win on Courts 2, 3 and 4 in straight-sets over their 12th seeded opponents.

Hahni Johnson and Savannah Spitzer were 21-13, 21-18 victors over Karina Petrovich and Kylie McKean in the second flight while Jada Hall and Gracyn Spresser beat Kayley Preston and Laney Gaston by a 21-17, 21-19 margin on Court 3.

Meanwhile, Sabrina VanDeList and Tye Wedhorn, who went 6-0 to lead the Mavs to last year's NCAA Division II title, were 21-11 and 21-12 victors on Court 4 over Allison Carter and M.J. Cackett.  VanDeList and Wedhorn have now won all seven of their AVCA Championship matches together.

They now have 20 wins this season, as do Johnson and Spitzer.  Hall and Spresser have 19.

The No. 1 and 5 matches featuring Macie Lachemann/Holly Schmidt and Savannah Ott/Hailey Peters were left unfinished.  Both Maverick pairs won their opening sets.  Ott and Peters were just two points away from winning the second set as well.

The Mavericks, now 15-7 overall, continue the tournament on Friday at 12:30 p.m. MDT against No. 13 seed Florida Southern.

The Pairs Challenge tournament will also be held throughout the day and includes two Maverick pairs.
