GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 21 Colorado Mesa baseball team split a Saturday (Apr. 1) doubleheader at The Diamon at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
In game one, Colorado Mesa couldn't muster much offense in a 4-1 setback to the Regis Rangers that snapped their 10-game win streak.
The Mavericks only recorded three hits in the game.
Julian Boyd finished 2-for-3 with the team's lone RBI while pinch hitter
Braden Winget picked up the other hit as the Mavericks rallied in the seventh.
Colorado Mesa loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on base before a line out and strikeout ended the threat.
The combination of
Kannon Handy and
Jacob Rhoades pitched well enough to win. Handy allowed four runs on six hits, walked one and struck out six in five innings of work while Rhoades came in after and pitched the final two innings of scoreless baseball.
In the night cap,
Robert Sharrar's single through the left side in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Mavericks a 2-1 walk-off win and gave the Mavericks a doubleheader split of the day.
Julian Boyd walked to lead the inning off followed by a
Christos Stefanos walk on six pitches. Boyd moved up to third on a fly out by
Kolby Felix while pinch runner
Jared Grenz moved up on the next pitch on defensive indifference. Sharrar slashed the 1-1 pitch he saw throught the left side to give the Mavericks the win.
Heading into the eighth, the score was knotted at 1-1 as both teams scored in their half of the first inning. Boyd delivered a bunt single that scored
Kennedy Hara for the Mavericks run.
Liam Hohenstein earned the start in game three of the series and was a little erratic, but his numbers say he pitched well. He allowed one run on six hits, walked none, and struck out three while not factoring into the decision. He did hit three batters in 64 pitches on the afternoon.
Closer
Anthony Durbano was thrust into long relief duty and made the second longest appearance of his Maverick career on Saturday. He pitched three and a third innings and allowed one hit and struck out two to earn his second win of the season.
The Mavericks move their record to 22-8 on the season and 13-2 in the RMAC while keeping their conference lead at three and a half games over both MSU Denver and CSU Pueblo.
The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon with a single nine inning game beginning at Noon.
