KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Colorado Mesa raced out to an early lead and pulled away in the fourth quarter to record a 21-7 win over Quincy from Bourke Field in Kansas City.
Jed Brummett continued his streak of having a hat trick or better in every game this season, sharing the team lead with four goals for the game and extending his team and RMAC lead with 24 goals this year.
Hunter Holcomb also scored four goals, a season-high for the junior that brought his season total to nine. Brummett and Holcomb each scored one of their goals on an extra man opportunity for the Mavs.
After ending Friday's game against Rockhurst with seven unanswered goals, the Mavericks kept the hot streak rolling by scoring the first eight goals on Saturday morning. The Mavs had a 6-0 lead after a quarter thanks to two goals from Holcomb and
AJ Switzer along with tallies from
Jed Brummett and a first of the season for sophomore
Logan Smith.
While Quincy was competitive in quarters two and three, the Mavericks ended the game on a 9-2 scoring run spanning the final 18 minutes of the contest.
Sal Iaria notched his first hat trick in a Maverick uniform, with all three of his goals coming in the fourth quarter. A day after scoring his first goal of the season,
Braden Lowe added two more in the second half, coincidentally CMU's 10
th and 20
th goals of the night.
The Mavericks ran away in part because Quincy was forced to play shorthanded. Colorado Mesa had four penalties called on them during the game, but Quincy had seven including the final six of the game, with five in the fourth quarter alone.
For the second consecutive day, CMU dominated the team stats. The Mavericks had a 52-36 edge in shots, a 41-21 advantage in ground balls and a 20-9 advantage in the faceoff circle. The Mavericks were 2-for-7 on extra man opportunities while Quincy was relatively successful, going 2-for-4.
Calvin Doucette played the first half in goal while
Mac Bayless entered for the second half. Each goalie made five saves apiece, with Doucette allowing two goals and Bayless conceding five.
Next week, the Mavericks will finally be closer to home. The Mavs will take on Rollins in a neutral-site game in Salt Lake City, as the Tars will be traveling from Florida to play both CMU and Westminster in the span of three days. Rollins is ranked No. 8 nationally in the USILA Top 20 Poll, while CMU is among teams receiving votes.
