Mavs claim two D-I wins to match school-record win streak

CMU posts 4-1 victories over Missouri State, UTEP

TUCSON, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team posted a pair of 4-1 wins over Division I foes on Friday and extended their winning streak to six matches, a school-record matching run.

Now 12-5 on the season, the Mavericks bested Missouri State in the morning before downing UTEP for the second time this season in their first two duals of the weekend Wildcat Spring Challenge which continues Saturday here at the University of Arizona's Bear Down Beach.

Ten of the 11 Mavericks in action throughout the day posed at least one individual win as the No. 2, 3 and 4 pairs all went 2-0.

Against Missouri State, the Mavs clinched the dual early as winning on Courts 2, 4 and 1 in straight sets.

Hahni Johnson and Savannah Spitzer were 21-12, 21-9 victors at No. 2 while Tye Wedhorn and Sabrina VanDeList were able to prevail 21-18, 21-17 on Court 4.  Meanwhile, Holly Schmidt and Macie Lachemann battled to win 26-24, 21-19 over Grayson Hall and Tylar Garrett in the top flight, which clinched the team victory.

CMU redshirt freshman Gracyn Spresser also won alongside partner Jada Hall at No. 3 in a 21-11, 18-21, 16-14 thriller over Manuela Niemeyer and MacKenzie Steele.  Spresser was on the Missouri State roster last season while redshirting although Niemeyer and Steele are freshman this season and thus new to the Bear roster this season.

The No. 5 match was just as close and went to the Bears' Riley Drew and Adison Crider, who were able to come from a set down to win 14-21, 21-16, 15-13 over CMU's Savannah Ott and Sydney Leffler.

Against UTEP, a team the Mavericks had defeated here last month, the Mavs won each of the first four decided matches in straight sets.

Wedhorn and VanDeList were the first to finish, polishing off Aaliyah Austin and Deanna Almaguer, 21-14, 21-11.  Johnson and Spitzer then finished a 21-19, 21-11 win over Ema Uskovic and Sara Pustahija before Hall and Spresser clinched the dual with a 21-14, 21-19 win at No. 3.

Ott and Hailey Peters were also able to claim a later 21-7, 21-18 win over Madison Hill and Marian Ovalle on Court 5.  Schmidt and Lachemann were downed 21-17, 21-19 on Court 1 by Krista Paegle and Katie Martin.
Leffler and Rianne Brown also split sets in an exhibition match against the Miners.  A third set was not played.

The Mavericks will continue their weekend on Saturday playing two more Division I foes in Santa Clara and 18th-ranked Arizona, which went 2-0 on Friday with wins over Missouri State and Santa Clara, which defeated UTEP.
