#21 Mavericks Make it 10 in a row with win over Regis

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 21 Colorado Mesa baseball team made it 10 in a row with a 13-7 win over the Regis Rangers on Friday (Mar. 31) afternoon at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Colorado Mesa improved to 21-7 on the season and 12-1 in conference play to stay atop the standings as all other teams in the conference were idle.

RMAC Pitcher of the Week David Craig got the ball in the series opener and didn't have his best stuff and did not factor into the decision after throwing 89 pitches in four innings. His bullpen picked him up in a big way.

Cade Nicol pitched the next four innings and threw 64 pitches in his outing. He allowed one run (zero earned) on one hit, walked two and struck out five to earn his second win of the season.

Freshman Bridger Clontz came in to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Despite the Mavericks solid effort on the mound, pitching wasn't all that spectacular in total on the day. Both teams would go onto walk 15 batters and hit another three in the contest.

Offensively the Mavericks went back to employ one of their tactics that worked early in the season…use the big inning. After falling behind 3-0 after one and a half, the Mavericks scored seven runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth and two in the eighth.

After Jonathan Gonzalez tied it with a RBI single up the middle in the second, Julian Boyd stepped to the plate later in the inning with the bases loaded. Boyd sent a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for an oppo-taco grand slam to put the Mavericks up 7-3. It was Boyd's sixth home run of the season and moved his season RBI total to 37.

The senior finished the game 2-for-5 with a double and the grand slam.

Braden Winget, Robert Sharrar and Gonzalez all finished the game with multiple hits.

Sharrar launched his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, a solo shot that made the score 9-6.

Gonzalez went 2-for-3 in the game with three runs driven in and finished the month on a hugely positive note. The redshirt junior was batting an even .100 entering the month of March and is going to finish the month batting .328.

The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1:00pm.
