IRVINE, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks wrapped up their 3-day, 6-match swing throughout the Los Angeles area with a pair of dominant 5-0 victories over Golden West College and Irvine Valley College on Thursday afternoon in a tr-dual at the Laser Beach Courts.
The Mavericks won every set and every match throughout the day and improved to 10-5 overall and to 4-2 on their spring break trip while reaching double figures for team wins for the second straight year.
The reigning AVCA Small College Beach NCAA Division II Champions have won nine of their last 11 matches overall, including seven by 5-0 scores.
The Mavs continued to use their same lineup in the top four flights but mixed things up on Court 5 and in exhibition matches against their junior college counterparts.
Holly Schmidt, who became the CMU's winningest player in program history on Wednesday, again teamed with
Macie Lachemann for a 21-7 and 21-12 No. 1 win over Golden West's Maci Hendry and Iliana Galindo. Schmidt and Lachemann then won 21-15, 21-11 over Irvine Valley's Sydney Dews and Barrett Nolan to raise their overall record this year to 12-9, including a 11-4 mark in duals this spring.
Schmidt now has 39 career wins while Lachemann is two behind with 37, one more than the former record of 36, held by current assistant coach
Ara Norwood.
Meanwhile,
Sabrina VanDeList and
Tye Wedhorn also raised their record to 11-4 at No. 4 as both moved to 34 career wins with incredibly dominant wins on Thursday. They allowed just one point in a 21-0, 21-1 victory over GWC and were 21-14, 21-8 winners over the host Lasers.
Hahni Johnson and
Savannah Spitzer also went 2-0 on Court 2, posting a 21-5, 21-6 win over the Rustlers' Paige Phillips and Genna Ambroso before winning, 21-12, 21-17 over Chloe Swanson and Gabi Brown of IVC.
Jada Hall and
Gracyn Spresser were victorious in both of their No. 3 matches as well, taking down Cassandra Flores and Leslie Cambray by a 21-9, 21-7 score against GWC before winning 21-14, 25-23 over Angie Griego and Tessa Marocco in a the closest of all the matches in the dual against IVC.
Sydney Leffler was also 2-0 on the day, teaming with
Savannah Ott for a 21-8, 21-3 win over Golden West's Michelle Jackson and Handassah Miranda at No. 5 before playing alongside
Hailey Peters in a 21-13, 21-14 win over Alessanda Nitogilia and Kendall Fraser in the second dual against IVC.
Lizzy Hood and
Rianne Brown also won an exhibition match over IVC's Sydney Schuler and Kayla Torres by a 21-14, 21-10 score while Peters and Ott combined to win an extended exhibition set, 28-14 over the Lasers' Felicia Bonus and Olivia Ortega.
The Mavericks will continue their season on Mar. 31-Apr. 1 when they head back to Tucson, Arizona for the second time this season to play in the Wildcat Spring Challenge hosted by the University of Arizona Wildcats.
