NORTHRIDGE, Calif.— Holly Schmidt became Colorado Mesa University's winningest beach volleyball player as the Mavericks recorded a pair of team wins on Wednesday here at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex.
Schmidt, who now has 37 career wins, and partner
Macie Lachemann, who has 35, helped the Mavericks pull out a 3-2 win over the host Matadors in their first match of the day before the Mavericks dominated many of the matches in a 4-1 win over Hope International.
The Mavericks, the reigning AVCA Small College Beach NCAA Division II National Champions, improved to 8-5 overall and picked up their second win of the season over an NCAA Division I institution with the win over the Matadors, who fell to 9-6.
Hope International, which represents the NAIA ranks, fell to 5-9.
The Mavericks' No. 3 and 5 duos went 2-0 throughout Schmidt's record-setting day, which put her one career win ahead of current assistant coach
Ara Norwood, who had finished her 5-year playing stint with the Mavericks in 2022 with 36 victories.
Schmidt, a fifth-year senior from Castle Rock, Colorado, and Lachemann, a fifth-year senior from Arroyo Grande, California, came from a set down to win their top-flight match against the CSUN Matadors' top pair of Lauren Eknoian and Tasha Mae. The final set scores were 14-21, 21-18, 15-9 and helped the Mavericks come from a 2-0 overall team deficit after CSUN had won the first two decided matches at No. 2 and 4.
Five of the six matches, including an exhibition affair, in the Matadors were decided in three sets as
Hailey Peters and
Savannah Ott clinched the dual with a 21-19, 23-25, 16-14 extra-point thriller over Seyvion Waggoner and Abigail Alvarez at No. 5.
Jada Hall and
Gracyn Spresser were also 21-17, 21-17 winners on Court 3 over Victoria Rogers and Mac McCarthy.
Things were more straight forward against the Royals as the Mavs clinched the dual early taking straight-set wins at No. 2, 4 and 5 before Hall and Spresser added 3-set win for good measure to complete their 2-0 day. The duo were 21-11, 15-21, 15-11 winners over Cassidy Kofforth and Stephanie Perez.
Ott and Peters were 21-12, 21-12 victors over Ariel Garcia and Mariana Turner and provided the winning team point in both duals.
Elsewhere,
Hahni Johnson and
Savannah Spitzer were 21-18, 21-8 winners at No. 2 and
Sabrina VanDeList and
Tye Wedhorn claimed a 21-18, 21-13 win at No. 4.
Sydney Leffler and
Rianne Brown also won a 21-10, 21-7 exhibition match for the Mavericks in the dual with the Royals.
CMU will wrap up their Spring Break trip through Southern California when they head to Orange County for Thursday afternoon matches against Golden West College and tri-dual host Irvine Valley College at the Laser Beach Courts in Irvine.
