LONG BEACH, Calif.— Holly Schmidt matched the Colorado Mesa University record for career wins as the Maverick beach volleyball squad came just short of a victory over Boise State University, continuing to receive votes in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Coaches Top 20 Poll.
That 3-2 loss came just after the Mavericks were defeated, 5-0 by 12
th-ranked and host Long Beach State in a Tuesday tri-dual here at Rosie's Dog Beach.
Schmidt matched the Maverick record of 36, now jointly held with current assistant coach
Ara Norwood, as she and partner
Macie Lachemann came from a set down to claimed a victory on Court 1 over the Broncos' top pair of Sierra Land and Madison Nichols.
Lachemann now has 34 career victories.
Schmidt and Lachemann dropped the first set of Tuesday's match, 21-17, but won the second 21-18 before taking the third 15-11.
They also avenged a 21-15, 22-20 loss to Land and Nichols back on Feb. 24, 2023 during the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz. The Broncos won that dual, 4-1.
The Mavericks other point on Tuesday came on Court 5 as
Savannah Ott and
Hailey Peters defeated Joey Benson, 23-21, 21-19.
Earlier, the Broncos had won straight-set matches at No. 2 and 4 to take the early overall lead. However, the Mavericks' victories tied the score at 2, making the No. 3 match decisive.
That match went to three sets as BSU's Amilia Guerra-Acuna and Lily Patock were battling with CMU's
Jada Hall and
Gracyn Spresser. Hall and Spresser won the first set, 21-19 but dropped the second, 21-15.
The third set then went to extra points as Guerra-Acuna and Patock pulled out the 17-15 win to win the match and the dual.
Earlier in the morning, the Mavericks were not able to win any sets against the host Beach. However, Schmidt and Lachemann put up the best fight, falling 21-14 and 21-19 to Sydney Stevens and Julia Westby. Hall and Spresser also combined for 33 points in a 21-17, 21-16 defeat at the hands of Mari Molina and Christine Deroos.
The Mavericks are now 6-5 on the season while the Beach improved to 9-8 with the win over the Mavs and then to 10-8 with a 5-0 win over Boise State, which is now 14-5.
The Mavs will play another tri-dual on Wednesday when they head to Northridge to face CSUN and Hope International.
