GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team ran its winning streak to five as the Mavericks dominated visiting Trinidad State Junior College in both ends of a home doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the CMU Beach Courts.
The Mavs (6-3) won both duals by 5-0 margins without dropping a set and held the Trojans (0-2) to single-digit point totals in 18 of the 20 total sets throughout the day.
The Mavericks are now 12-0 all-time in home duals.
The Mavs used the same pairings in the first through fourth flights of both duals as
Macie Lachemann and
Holly Schmidt inched closer to the Mavs' all-time career wins record with a pair of victories in the top flight. The fifth-year seniors defeated Jada Lawson and Anna Jasinsky by a 21-7, 21-6 margin in the first dual before winning by 21-8 and 21-7 scores in the second.
Schmidt now has 35 career victories, just one shy of the CMU record of 36, currently held by now assistant coach
Ara Norwood. Lachemann has 33 career victories to rank third in program history.
The pair also moved to 7-2 in the spring and 8-7 overall this year after they represented the Mavericks at the AVCA Fall Beach Championships, held in November in Hunstville, Alabama.
Meanwhile,
Hahni Johnson and
Savannah Spitzer also extended their winning streak to six with a 21-6, 21-6 win over Eimaya Medina and Ana Perez in the first dual. They then defeated Maliah Gardner and Perez by a 21-9, 21-5 score in the second.
Jada Hall and
Gracyn Spresser swept the No. 3 doubles matches, defeating Gardner and Nikolina Werbick in the first dual by a 21-10, 21-5 set scores. They then defeated Medina and Werbick by a 21-14, 21-8 margin in the second dual.
Tye Wedhorn and
Sabrina VanDeList also won both of their No. 4 matches as they recorded their 28
th and 29
th career victories while improving to a team-best 8-1 this season. They gave up just seven total points in a 21-2, 21-5 win over Natalyn Leon and Neveah Martinez in the first dual before holding the same Trojan pair to just eight points during a 21-5, 21-3 win later in the day.
The Mavericks did swap out their No. 5 pair as
Savannah Ott and
Taylor Scherff posted a 21-4, 21-7 win over Avery Palmgren and Kalese Torrez in the first dual.
Sydney Leffler and
Hailey Peters then defeated the same Trojan duo by a 21-8, 21-6 later in the day.
The Mavericks will begin a 3-day, 5-match Spring Break swing in Southern California on Tuesday playing at Long Beach State, ranked 13
th nationally, according to the latest AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll. They will also play Boise State, receiving votes in that poll, for the second time this season in Long Beach.
