Mavs cruise past ThunderWolves, 20-5

Davis leads 12 goal scorers with four

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's lacrosse team, ranked 24th nationally, scored 16 straight goals as they cruised past visiting CSU Pueblo, 20-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon here at the Community Hospital Unity Field.

Twelve different Mavericks found the net as Kiley Davis recorded her third 4-goal season of the young season as the Mavericks improved to 2-1 overall and to 2-0 in RMAC play.  Justine Anderson also added a first-quarter hat-trick, while Ali Bryant, Caroline Ohngemach and Sophie Astone all scored two goals.

Davis also added two assists, two ground balls and four draw controls finishing with six offensive points.

Courtney Havel and Regan Wentz had 3-assist days while freshman Emme Rezoski and Bryant tallied six draw controls apiece in the victory, CMU's 14th in as many all-time meetings with the ThunderWolves (0-3, 0-2 RMAC), who had just 13 active players on the day.

Taylor Jakeman, Melanie Evans, Elizabeth Renken and Carson Dickey all scored and had an assist as well.  Xcaret Salvador and Molly Gilbert were also able to beat Pack net-minder Naomi Price-Burton, who made seven saves while facing 39 Maverick shots, 27 of which were on goal.

The Pack was held to just 17 shots as they were guilty of 19 turnovers while going just 7-for-19 on clearing attempts.

The Mavericks never trailed and scored the game's first goal just 1:47 as Anderson converted on a Pack failed clear.

The ThunderWolves did score 1:02 later to tie the game at 1 before the Mavericks began to steam-roll their opponents with 8-goal first and second quarters to build at 16-1 lead at half.

Davis then scored her final goal just 1:16 into the third quarter as the Maverick reserves got substantial playing time in the second half.

The running-clock rule was implemented early in the second quarter and continued through the rest of the game.

The Mavericks will close out a season-starting 4-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon when they host the Rockhurst University Hawks in a non-conference match-up at 4 p.m.   The Hawks are 4-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to then eighth-ranked Regis on Feb. 28.

Evans will enter that game with 99 career offensive points, just one away from becoming the 11th Maverick to reach the century mark.    Davis has 115 to rank seventh in program history.
