GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Kiley Davis scored a career-high seven goals while
Taylor Jakeman chipped in a season-high five to lead Colorado Mesa to a key regional win as the Mavericks defeated Rockhurst 17-7 from Community Hospital Unity Field on Tuesday night.
The Mavericks relied on just four different goal scorers to reach their tally of 17, as
Justine Anderson had a career-high four goals and
Brianna Anderson found the net once. The Mavericks had a 36-23 shots advantage and had 26 shots on goal compared to 12 for Rockhurst.
CMU really ran away with things as the game went along, outscoring the Hawks 11-4 in the second half after a goalie change caused a momentum swing. Rockhurst starting goalie Sydney Shindler made seven saves against seven goals allowed in the first 30 minutes, but the Hawks opted to pull her at halftime in favor of Madeline Morrison. The move seemed to backfire, as Morrison allowed 10 goals while making only one save in 20 minutes before the Hawks put Shindler back in.
Colorado Mesa started fast, outshooting the Hawks 7-1 in the first quarter and taking a 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of strikes from Jakeman. Davis scored twice in quick succession in the early part of the second quarter and Rockhurst scored two goals sandwiched around Jakeman's third to complete a hat trick. The Mavs took a 6-3 lead at the halftime buzzer, as Jakeman scored her fourth of the half in a wild sequence in which the goal was first disallowed and then re-allowed after lengthy delays.
Davis took over in the third, scoring four of her seven in the third period. Rockhurst scored back-to-back goals to make things interesting at 10-6 with under two minutes left in the third quarter, but Davis scored twice in the span of 17 seconds to give CMU a 12-6 lead heading into the final period.
Those two strikes by Davis ended up being the first two of seven consecutive goals scored by the Mavericks.
Justine Anderson scored three goals in the fourth quarter, including one shorthanded, before assisting
Brianna Anderson for Brianna's first goal of the season.
Shannon Murphy earned the win in goal for CMU, but didn't have much to do, making just five saves. The Maverick defense was swarming Rockhurst all game long as CMU was able to cause 17 turnovers.
Up next for the Mavs is a three-game road trip to Florida, beginning on Tuesday, September 21 against Saint Leo. The Mavericks will play three games in five days against ranked opponents – No. 18 Saint Leo, No. 9 Rollins on March 23 and No. 2 Florida Southern on March 25.
