Mavs sweep Wildcats, Cougars in Saturday duals

CMU drops just one set in 5-0 wins

TEMPE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team won all but one set in dominant 5-0 victories over Wayne State (Neb.) College and South Mountain Community College on Saturday here at Kiwanis Park.

The victories allowed the Mavericks to improve to 3-3 as a team while Wayne State fell to 6-3.  South Mountain fell to 4-9.

The Mavs used the same lineup in both duals and held the WSC Wildcats' five duos to under ten points in three different sets on Courts 1, 4 and 5.  CMU was even more dominant against the SMCC Cougars, holding the Arizonans below ten points in four total sets, including a massive 21-9, 21-4 win by Sabrina VanDeList and Tye Wedhorn on Court 4.

That CMU pair is now a team-best 5-1 on the young season.

Against Wayne State, a team the Mavericks defeated in pool play at last year's AVCA Small College Beach Championships en-route to the NCAA Division II title, CMU dropped just one set.

Macie Lachemann and Holly Schmidt were 22-20, 21-8 victors over Taya Beller and Allie Petry on Court 1 while Hahni Johnson and Savannah Spitzer posted a 21-15, 21-6 win at No. 2.

Jada Hall and Gracyn Spresser were 21-13, 21-18 winners on Court 3 while VanDeList and Wedhorn downed Brooke Peltz and Rachel Walker by a 21-12, 21-8 margin.

Meanwhile, Savannah Ott and Hailey Peters came from a set down to win on Court 5, 14-21, 21-18, 15-9 over Havyn Heinz and Maggie Brahmer in the only 3-set affair of the day.

CMU's Sydney Leffler and Taylor Scherrf were also 21-13, 21-9 winners over a mixed team squad featuring the Mavs' Rianne Brown and WSC"s Taylor Bunjer in an unofficial exhibition match.

Against South Mountain, Schmidt and Lachemann won 21-10, 21-18 over the Cougars' top pair of Amelia Evans and Kristine Garcia.

Johnson and Spitzer were 21-10, 21-7 victors while Hall and Spresser won 21-9, 21-12 on Court 3.

Ott and Peters were 21-16, 21-15 winners while Leffler and Scherff claimed a pair of 21-14 set wins in an official exhibition match over Shayna Simmers and Hayden Rosales.

The Mavericks will wrap up their weekend in Arizona on Sunday at 9 a.m. Arizona Time (10 a.m. Mountain Daylight) taking on NAIA Park University-Gilbert at Bell Bank Park in Mesa.  The Buccaneers are currently 3-4 on the season.
