Mavericks take the opener in pivotal RMAC opening series

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team outslugged the MSU Denver Roadrunners in the series opening game on Saturday (Mar. 11) as they came away with a 17-7 win at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex. It was also the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
 
The Roadrunners plated two while the Mavericks scored one in the first to take a 2-1 lead. After the first, Colorado Mesa put up back-to-back four run innings in the second and third to take a 9-2 lead and they never looked back.
 
Colorado Mesa scored in six of the eight innings they batted failing to score in the sixth and eighth innings.
 
Harrison Rodgers delivered one of two home runs for Colorado Mesa. His three-run shot was a part of the four run second for the Mavericks. Rodgers was one of three Mavericks with multiple hits in the game for Colorado Mesa. He went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, four runs driven in with a double.
 
Junior Stevenson Reynolds smoked the other home run for the Mavericks as his three-run bomb came in the four run seventh inning. Reynolds finished the game 2-for-5 with three runs scored and four runs driven in with a double.
 
Declan Wiesner swung the hottest bat for the Mavericks as he finished 5-for-5 with two runs scored and a run driven in. He added two doubles and handled the Maverick pitching staff in the big win.
 
Freshman Liam Hohenstein earned his first collegiate win after getting his second straight start for the Mavericks. He allowed six runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three in six and a third innings pitched against one of the nation's top hitting teams.
 
Jordan Ellison pitched the final two and two thirds for the Mavericks allowing one run on four hits with two walks.
 
The two teams will continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
