GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team split a doubleheader with the No. 27 MSU Denver Roadrunners on Sunday (Mar. 12) afternoon at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks came-from-behind on several occasions to win game one but
Julian Boyd provided the storyline as he belted a 2-run, walk-off home run for the 11-9 win in the day's opener.
Boyd sent a 1-0 pitch to deep right field off Roadrunner closer Eric Cox for his fourth home run of the season. He finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs scored, three runs driven in and two doubles.
Harrison Rodgers added a no doubt, three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The junior finished 1-for-5with a run scored and four runs driven in.
The Mavericks trailed by scores of 3-0 after three innings, 6-3 after four innings, and 9-7 after six and a half innings, but managed to overcome each for the win.
Anthony Durbano earned the win in relief after pitching the final inning and tw- thirds of the game.
In the nightcap, the Roadrunners plated three runs in the first and never looked back in a 6-2 win for their first win in the series.
Colorado Mesa got solo home runs from
Max Valdez and Rob Sharrar for their two runs in the game. For Valdez, it was his fourth of the season while for Sharrar it was his second round-tripper of the season.
Caleb Thomason was the lone Maverick with multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-3 with a double.
The Mavericks will go for the series win on Monday as they will play the series finale beginning at 1pm from The Diamond.
