Mavs use big runs to cruise to RMAC win over FLC

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The nation's 24th-ranked Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team used 9-1 and 7-0 runs in the first and second halves, respectively, as they cruised to a 19-7 victory over visiting Fort Lewis College in both teams' Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference openers on Friday afternoon here at the Community Hospital Unity Field.

The Mavericks (1-1, 1-0 RMAC) had 11 different goal scorers as Kiley Davis netted her second 4-goal game of the young season.  Ali Bryant also added a hat-trick and a 4-point game while Peyton Ivey recorded two goals and three assists, good for a career-high five offensive points.  She also added four ground balls.

FLC fell to 0-3 (0-1 RMAC) after going more than 24 minutes without a goal in the second half as the Mavericks cruised to the win while implementing a running clock and getting their reserves some nice playing time early in the season.

The Mavericks finished with a big 39-17 advantage in total shots and put 29 of their shots on goal.  They also had a 19-11 edge in draw controls as Bryant (7) and Davis (6) combined for 13.

Four different Mavericks finished with two caused turnovers in a feisty game that featured ten yellow cards, seven of which were handed out to the Skyhawks, who lost the services of two players for receiving two yellows.

The Mavericks scored three man-up goals throughout the contest.

Justin Anderson and Melanie Evans also joined Davis, Bryant and Anderson as multiple-goal scorers with two goals each while Regan Wentz, Courtney Havel, Xcaret Salvador, Carson Dickey, Amber Wennerstrom and Cameron Flynn all scored as well.

Autumn Rymerson was the only Skyhawk with two goals while Ellie Martinez had three points with one goal and two assists.  Averi Basso made nine saves for the Skyhawks but conceded the first 17 goals.

Shannon Murphy made three saves for the Mavericks and earned the win in net.

The teams traded goals in the early going as the Skyhawks took 1-0 and 2-1 leads before the Mavericks scored the next three goals of the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead.  After FLC sliced the deficit on a Nina Polk tally with 1:47 left in the first quarter, the Mavericks went on a 6-0 spurt featuring two Davis goals on both sides of the first half intermission.

Rymerson then scored brought the Skyhawks within 10-5 at the half before Dickey and Anderson goals in the opening three minutes of the second half reestablished the Maverick's 7-goal advantage at 12-5.

The Skyhawks then scored a free position shot goal from Zio Delgado with 10:27 left the in third quarter but would not score again until there was 1:17 left in the fourth as the Mavericks scored seven straight goals to blow the game wide open.

The Mavs have now won 10 straight games in the rivalry after the Skyhawks on the first 11 all-time meetings.  They have also won their RMAC opener in three straight seasons.

The Mavericks will remain at home for their next two games and will take on CSU Pueblo in another RMAC contest on Sunday at 1 p.m.
