SEATTLE— Kira MacGill obliterated the Colorado Mesa University indoor record for the 5,000 meters as she and
Mark Testa competed at the Husky Classic here in the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor on Friday night.
MacGill, a redshirt sophomore, ran to a time of 16 minutes, 23.31 seconds, taking down Lauren Lipski's former record of 17:41.80, set back in 2016, by more than a full minute and 18 seconds. She finished second in her section of 22 runners, 19 of which represented NCAA Division I institutions. Her time was also five seconds faster than the CMU outdoor 5K record of 16:28.42, set in 2011 by Hall of Honor member Alexis Skarda.
MacGill's effort was her first career attempt at the 5K indoors and was just her third 5K run overall. The cross country all-American now ranks fifth on the NCAA Division II national performance list and will likely qualify for next month's national championships in Virginia Beach, California. MacGill is also third on the RMAC performance list as the conference has five of the nation's top seven runners in the event so far this season.
Meanwhile, Testa shaved more than seven seconds off his PR in the 3,000 meters, running to a time of 8:30.99, which improves his No. 2 positioning on the Mavs' all-time performers chart behind only school-record holder
Tony Torres.
