Mavericks Pull Off the Upset of #12 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team has struggled with its youth throughout the season, but tonight they grew up in a big way. The Mavericks pulled off the biggest upset of the season as they defeated No. 12 Colorado School of Mines 59-52 on Friday (Feb. 10) evening in Lockridge Arena in a key Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.

The Mavericks finished the game on a 13-3 run that spanned the final 6:44 of the game. They retook the lead for the final time at 50-49 after Tia Slade made the back half of two free-throw attempts. Their previous lead came at 2:30 to play in the first period after Olivia Reed made a bucket to put the Mavericks up 12-9.

During the game ending run, Colorado Mesa answered the only shot the Orediggers made rather quickly. Mines' Ashley Steffeck buried a three to make it 49-46 Colorado School of Mines with 6:44 to play. On the Mavericks answered back with a three from Laura Gutierrez to even the score back up with 6:22 to go in the game. It was the only made three-pointer for the Mavericks on the evening.

Colorado School of Mines would only get a bucket from Megan Van de Graaf with 2:23 to play and a Van de Graaf made free-throw with just 13 seconds left in the game during the final 6:44.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks were scoring plenty of baskets with time not coming off the clock. They were 8-for-8 from the line in that stretch with both Kylie Kravig and Laura Gutierrez sinking 4-for-4 each.

Olivia Reed finished with a double double at 15 points and 11 rebounds while Monica Brooks had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Kylie Kravig had 12 points with Laura Gutierrez finished with 10.

Colorado School of Mines' Ashley Steffeck led all scorers in the contest with 19 points.

Colorado Mesa will close out the weekend with an afternoon tilt with the MSU Denver Roadrunners at 3:30 from the Auraria Events Center. The game was moved forward a half an hour to accomodate the men's game being on regional TV.
