GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa scored 50 points in the first half and didn't let up in the second half, firing on all cylinders for all 40 minutes of a 92-57 win over Regis at Brownson Arena.
Isaac Jessup led a balanced effort with 14 points and hit four of CMU's 16 three-pointers. The Mavericks' 16 triples are the fourth most in known single-game history for the program, just two away from the school record of 18 set against Fort Lewis in 2020.
The win is CMU's seventh straight and improves the Mavs to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the RMAC. Regis falls to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC with the loss. The Mavericks are 4-0 at home this season in what is the final home game for CMU before the holiday season.
Colorado Mesa shot 56 percent (32-57) from the field and 51 percent (16-31) from three-point range. By contrast, CMU forced Regis into a frustrating shooting night, as the Rangers were limited to 27.8 percent shooting from the field and 15 percent shooting from deep (4-26).
The Mavs set the tone early in the game. After Chase Mayo Harmon opened the scoring with a three-pointer for Regis, CMU went on a 19-0 run over the next seven-and-a-half minutes of game time. The Mavs were hot from behind the arc right away, as Koonce answered with a three-pointer to tie the score before threes from Jessup and Koonce after a
Christopher Speller layup made it 11-3 prior to the first media timeout.
The stoppage didn't slow the Mavs down one bit, as
Michael McCurry,
Sam Goulet,
Mac Riniker and
Owen Koonce combined for a quick eight points on just three field goal attempts before Regis halted the run with a couple of Eddy Egun free throws. A 7-0 Maverick run gave CMU a 24-point lead at 44-20 with just under five minutes to play, and a pair of Riniker free throws put the Mavs over the 50-point mark at halftime for the first time this year as the Mavs went to the locker room up 50-29.
Intent on putting together a full 40-minute performance, the Mavericks ran up the margin early in the second half and reached their game-high of 36 when
Ty Allred finished a fast break layup from a
Michael McCurry steal to make it 82-46 with 9:21 to go.
The Mavs had four players in double figures and seven players with eight or more points. After Jessup's 14,
Trevor Baskin had 13 points along with nine rebounds for Colorado Mesa, followed by
Christopher Speller's 12 and
Owen Koonce's 11.
Michael McCurry added nine points with
Sam Goulet and
Mac Riniker tallying eight apiece.
Colorado Mesa was able to empty the bench, with 15 players recording minutes for the Mavericks, including two career debuts and two additional season debuts. Redshirt junior guard
Levi Dombro and redshirt sophomore forward
Eric Pollert saw the court for the first time in the 2023-24 season, with both players recording two rebounds in seven minutes while Dombro added a block.
Redshirt freshman guard
Austin Thyne made his career debut in his second season on the Maverick roster. Thyne, a walk-on out of Scottsbluff High School in Sterling, Colorado, played six minutes and grabbed a defensive rebound. Thyne missed his only field goal attempt, from three-point range.
JP Shiers, a 7-foot-1 redshirt freshman center out of Mead High School, also made his collegiate debut in the closing minutes. Shiers logged an assist while going 0-for-2 from the field, igniting the crowd with a valiant poster dunk attempt.
Colorado Mesa has one game next week, facing Adams State on the road next Friday, December 15. The Mavericks will then go to Las Vegas the following week for a pair of neutral site matches, with a showdown with reigning regional hosts West Texas A&M on December 18 and Simon Fraser on December 19. After that trio of contests, the Mavs will be off for the holidays, returning to the court at home on January 5-6 against CSU Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands.
