GOLDEN, Colo.— Eddie Kurjak and
Zace Buckhold finished 1-2 in the men's high jump as both set NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks while several Maverick sprinters and hurdlers set new personal-records on a strong day of action for a small Colorado Mesa University track and field at the Mines Alumni Classic, contested Saturday here at the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Kurjak cleared a career-best 2.11 meters (6 feet, 11 inches) to win the event while moving into a tie for second place in CMU history. Buckhold was right behind with a personal-best clearance of 2.08 meters (6-9.75) as he also easily surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 2.03 meters while dominating the 14-jumper filed- that saw four others go out two heights earlier at 1.98 meters (6-6). Buckhold now ranks fourth in CMU history.
Kurjak and Buckhold also rank second and third on the early-season national performance list with marks reported as of press time on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile,
Josie Coffey cleared 1.64 meters (5-4.5) to place third in the high jump on a tie-breaker after each of the top five finishers in the 13-women field went out at the same bar.
On the track,
Justin Thompson set a PR time of 7.07 seconds in the 60 meters
after winning the long jump on Friday night.
Venesa Handzhiyska finished the women's heats in 8.12 seconds in her first sprint as Maverick.
Meanwhile,
Katie Thomson (9.29) and
Hope Matteson (9.39) both set PR times in the women's 60-meter hurdles as the only other Mavs to compete throughout the day. Thomson also cleared 1.49 meters (4-10.5) in the high jump.
The Mavs will be in action again next weekend sending bigger contingents to meets at both UCCS and Western Colorado University.
