Mavericks Top Roadrunners, Will Host RMAC Semi

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa took care of business in the quarterfinals of the RMAC Tournament, and thanks to another upset elsewhere in the bracket, the Mavs will be at home once again for the semifinal round this Wednesday.

The Mavericks received first-half goals from Sauvelyne Randel and Adessa Correa, propelling the Mavs to a 3-2 victory over MSU Denver in the No. 4/5 seed matchup of the RMAC tournament. CMU now advances to the semifinals of the conference tournament this Wednesday at 6 p.m. against eighth-seeded Westminster, which shocked top seed and regular season champs UCCS 1-0 on the Mountain Lions' home field. The Mavs will host Westminster due to being the higher seed.

More broadly, the Mavericks are 14-3-1 overall and have won two straight since a late-season three-game losing streak. MSU Denver's season likely ends with the loss.

Colorado Mesa outshot MSU Denver 18-15 and had a slim 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Both goalkeepers, CMU's Keely Wieczorek and MSU Denver's Kylie Bach, made four saves each in net.

The Mavs got on the board in the 11th minute thanks to the 12th goal of the year from Randel, who was honored with a First Team All-RMAC selection earlier Sunday. Fellow first-teamer Carli Dare played Randel through and the redshirt junior cut from left to right across the defense before hitting a low shot across her body to the far post past Bach.

Correa doubled the lead in the 32nd minute, winning back possession deep in the Roadrunner half and taking a shot that took a bounce and skipped over the hands of Bach, who was sprawling out to her right.

Despite the two-goal lead at halftime, the teams were dead even 9-9 in first half shots and 2-2 in shots on goal. Wieczorek was called upon to make two saves in less than a minute, tipping a long-distance strike from Kailey Maness over the bar in the 22nd minute and scooping up a strike from Emily Sirois in the 23rd off the ensuing corner.

The Mavericks took a three-goal lead just five minutes into the second half. Randel was the playmaker, finding Second Team All-RMAC forward Kylie Wells with a through ball. The sophomore forward cut inside on her right foot and hit a perfectly placed curling shot to the far post out of Bach's reach. It was the sixth goal of the season for Wells, all of which have come against RMAC opposition, and the second straight game with an assist for Randel.

MSU Denver did not go away quietly. The Roadrunners got one back in the 54th minute on a quickfire move from Maness to Brooklyn Gold that was finished by an onrushing Isa Durkin from point blank range. The Roadrunners' second goal came with just 20 seconds left in the match as Maness scored from a tight angle after a ball backspun away from Wieczorek.

The Mavericks were one of three higher-seeded teams to win in the first round, as second-seeded Colorado School of Mines and third-seeded Regis each won to set up an all-Denver clash against one another in the other semifinal, which will kick off at 2 p.m. Wednesday before Westminster and CMU kick off at 6 p.m.
