Mavs Punch Championship Game Ticket

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's soccer will be playing for an RMAC Tournament championship.

The Mavericks secured their spot with a 3-0 victory over Westminster in the semifinal, as Kylie Wells and Sauvelyne Randel continued their points-scoring streaks with a goal and an assist each. Mikayla Eccher also scored for the Mavs, who improve to 15-3-1 on the season.

The eighth-seeded Griffins were unable to replicate the magic that let them upset the RMAC's No. 1 seed, UCCS, in the quarterfinal round last Sunday. For the final next Sunday at 1 p.m., CMU will travel to Colorado School of Mines, who cruised over Regis 4-0 in the other semifinal.

The Mavs wasted no time finding the net in this one, scoring two goals in the match's first 11 minutes. Redshirt senior midfielder Mikayla Eccher got the ball at the top of the box off a pass from Kylie Wells and fired a hard shot to the left of a diving Mashaun Estridge to put CMU ahead 1-0 after only two and a half minutes.

Colorado Mesa made it two just after the 10-minute mark. Abby Fotheringham controlled the ball on the right wing and played a through ball to Sauvelyne Randel on an overlapping run. Randel hit a cross first time which looped over the goalkeeper and Wells timed her run perfectly, using her chest to tap the ball in the net from point blank range.

The third goal came in the 65th minute. Randel worked her way through traffic with the ball and fired a shot, which was blocked by a defender. Randel was the first to react to the ricochet, however, and had a one-on-one opportunity once she ran onto the ball. With Estridge charging out from her net, Randel kept her composure and placed the ball high into the top of the net for her 13th goal of the season, the second-most in the RMAC.

Unlike the quarterfinal game against MSU Denver when CMU also jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the Mavericks didn't allow Westminster back in the game by conceding late goals. The Mavs held Westminster without a shot on goal in the first half and Keely Wieczorek made three saves on the day, all fairly comfortable from long range.

Colorado Mesa outshot Westminster 20-11 overall and had an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Abby Fotheringham took five shots and put three shots on target along with her assist in Wednesday's match. Randel had three shots while Wells, Eccher and Adessa Correa had two shots apiece.

The Mavericks only have one RMAC Tournament championship in program history, which came back in 1998. That year, the Mavs only needed one win to take home the tournament crown. This year is just the second time the Mavs have gotten two wins in the RMAC Tournament, joining the 2011 team that was previously the only Maverick team to appear in an RMAC Tournament final since the league moved to an eight-team tournament.

With every postseason victory, the Mavericks continue to solidify their case for the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA's latest regional rankings that came out earlier Wednesday, Colorado Mesa was ranked third in the South Central Region, trailing only DBU and Mines and leading Texas Woman's, UCCS, St. Mary's, Texas A&M International and Regis in the top eight. The top six teams from the South Central region will qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
