Mavericks Beat Westminster To Finish Season Strong

SALT LAKE CITY – Sauvelyne Randel had two goals and an assist, propelling the Colorado Mesa women's soccer program to a 3-1 win over Westminster in the regular season finale.

Kylie Wells added a goal and an assist while Adessa Correa also tallied an assist as the Mavericks snapped a three-match losing streak and secured a home playoff game.

With the win, the Mavericks finish the regular season at 13-3-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the RMAC, good for fourth place in the conference standings. The Mavs will be the No. 4 seed in the RMAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded MSU Denver in an RMAC Tournament quarterfinal clash at Community Hospital Unity Field on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Randel scored once in each half, opening the scoring in the 26th minute and immediately answering Westminster's goal with one of her own to allow CMU to retake the lead. Randel then kick-started a counterattack by playing through Adessa Correa, who crossed to Wells for the Mavericks' third.

The first two goals of the match, one by each team, came from set pieces and had nearly identical setups. The Mavericks earned a free kick from outside the left side of the penalty box midway through the first half. Wells hit a cross into the box and Randel timed her run perfectly, losing her marker and heading the ball in from close range.

Westminster responded early in the second half on a similar play. The Griffins earned their free kick from the right side of the box, and while the initial headed attempt of the cross was blocked, the ball fell to Kara Dickey, who booted the ball into the top of the net from six yards away.

The score didn't stay tied for long, however. Colorado Mesa was able to drive the ball into Westminster's defensive zone. A shot attempt was blocked by a defender, but Randel was first to react to the deflection and buried a one-on-one chance into the net. Randel now has 11 goals this season.

The Mavs doubled their lead on the ball from Randel to Correa to Wells, with Wells tallying her fifth goal of the season. CMU outshot Westminster 20-11 with 12 shots on goal. Keely Wieczorek made three saves in net for the Mavericks.

Next up is a home game this Sunday against MSU Denver in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinal. It will be the second half of a playoff doubleheader in Grand Junction Sunday, with the men's RMAC Tournament semifinal at noon preceding the women's game at 3 p.m.

If the Mavs win that one, they will advance to face the winner of the top-seeded UCCS and eighth-seeded Westminster next Wednesday. UCCS clinched the regular-season title on the final day of the season with a 1-0 win over CSU Pueblo. The RMAC Tournament championship game is the following Sunday, November 12.
