DURANGO, Colo. – Colorado Mesa scored one goal in each half to get back to winning ways, defeating Fort Lewis 2-0 to improve to 10-0-1 on the season.
The fifth-ranked Mavericks received a first-half goal from
Tatum Pfalmer and a second-half penalty kick from
Mira Houck while
Keely Wieczorek made three saves to seal the shutout victory as the Mavs rebounded from last Sunday's 1-1 draw at home with MSU Denver.
Colorado Mesa outshot the hosts 26-12 and 13-3 in attempts on target. Fort Lewis split the game in half between two goalies, with Riley Bravin making seven saves and Katlyn Rosenbaum making four while each keeper conceded once.
Houck led the Mavericks with five shots while she and
Abby Fotheringham had three shots on goal apiece.
Mikayla Eccher (four shots, two on goal),
Adessa Correa and
Kylie Wells (three shots) were also offensive threats.
The Mavs were on the front foot immediately, forcing a Brevin save from a Correa shot just 33 seconds into the match. Bravin made five saves in the game's first 20 minutes.
Pfalmer got on the scoresheet just three minutes after coming into the game as a substitute. Fotheringham was involved, sending in a cross from out wide where Pfalmer was waiting in the six-yard box and redirected a header into the top left corner of the net. The goal is Pfalmer's second of the season while the assist is Fotheringham's third of the year.
The Mavericks evenly balanced their 26 shot attempts, collecting 13 in each half. Houck made it 2-0 in the 57
th minute by coolly converting her first penalty kick attempt of the year. Colorado Mesa is 4-7 from the spot as a team this season.
Colorado Mesa returns home to face Western Colorado on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Community Hospital Unity Field.
