Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dave Jahnke (Sports Information Director)

Strong Defensive Effort Leads to Third Straight Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team moved their season long win streak to three after a 52-29 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars on Saturday (Jan. 7) evening in Brownson Arena for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

The defense the Mavericks have been playing is a big reason for the three-game winning streak. They have held their opponents to less than ten points in a quarter for seven straight quarters going back to the second quarter of last night's contest with Chadron State. Also, for the second straight night they limited their opponent to just 18 percent from the field.

Colorado Mesa limited the Cougars to just made three that came late in the game when Mia Guest hit a desperation three with the shot clock ticking down with 1:12 to play in the game.

Offensively, the Mavericks shot a shade over 40 percent from the field and had six made three-pointers on the evening. Different from previous games, the Mavericks converted 15 Colorado Christian turnovers into 19 points.

They led the game wire-to-wire and extended their biggest lead to 27 points in the fourth quarter after Tia Slade made her lone three of the night at the 4:33 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 51-24.

Olivia Reed finished with a double double as she poured in 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. She finished the feat by pulling down 10 boards and three blocked shots.

Reed was the lone Maverick in double figures but that didn't mean others didn't have a stat stuffer night. Kylie Kravig finished with eight points, eight assists, and three steals while Jamisyn Heaton had nine points and seven rebounds.

Colorado Christian came into the game as one of the top rebounding teams in the conference and the Mavericks them even as each team had 36 rebounds.

The Mavericks will head back on the road next week. They will travel to South Dakota for matchups with Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines.
